  • WTF? Tax troubles

I recently received a letter from the state telling me I still owe them taxes.

Having looked at the letter, they say I got paid $935 dollars last year, and I owe them $26.60, plus $1.40 interest, so $30 all together.

I filed my damn taxes on time, and I just went over them again.

I got paid $9335 last year, and $280.60 was deducted. According to the worksheet, that was exactly what was owed them. I double checked on my W2s and the info was accurate. I just cannot figure out what the hell they think they're doing.

must have been some mixup along the way.
    call them up.
I had an issue last year that was cleared up with a simple phone call.
Unfortunatly they were in the right and I owed some $500-$600 but still at least I understood why after the call. At least I am paid up now.

Kullervo is right about that. Somewhere in the letter is a number to call about your case. Remember, don't be sucky. You may PM me for more specific info.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Yeah, I know. I was just in a pissy mood last night, what with my ER visit and all.

I am currently on hold with them. My theory right now is some kind of computer error, what with the info in my letter being the same as on my W2s, just with a decimal place removed. It's just so frustrating.

Talked to a lady on the phone, she's sending my return for review, I don't have to do anything else.

            *accountant hat on*

If you have any confirmation whatsoever that you filed on time - anything: e-file form, copy of tax return with date on it, whatever - write them a nice, polite letter that states "I have filed on time, kindly abate the penalties and interest and see proof attached."

Also, enclose a copy of your W-2. the more proof of proper withholding you have, the more likely they are to listen. I know you called them, but a letter is still a good idea. The more of a paper trail, the better.
Sometimes, it just doesn't pay to get out of the blanket nest.
