In the ever changing economy, blah blah blah, okay forget that crap.
I live in a Dual Language State (New Mexico teaches both English and Spanish in their classes).
Since we are becoming more a global economy, should we start teaching foreign languages in elementary school to help children compete in the future? Is so, should it be a mandatory class and how many should we teach?
Personally, I adore French. I spoke it when I was a very small child (preschool and headstart) but had to stop speaking it because I lived in a Hick Town and the teacher thought my sibling and I were speaking gibberish. No, they'd never heard of the French language before. I learned to speak it off Canadian Sesame Street.
I no longer speak French. I can say very little in Spanish and my English, like most Americans, suck.
However, I did learn some (translates to "remember some") Sign Language in High School as my designated "mandatory" foreign language.
What do you guys think?
