  • So our water heater got red tagged ...

This was on Friday. For those who don't know what that means: it stopped working, and we couldn't get it re-lit, so we called the gas company. The technician came out, got it lit, took one look, and jumped back. Scary. He then turned it off, shut off the gas valve, and put a tag on it that said "Explosion hazard:do not turn on". Awesome.

The plumber is here finally right now installing the new one! Boo to landlords (in general lol) but hooray for no more boiling water on the stove to bathe! Yay!

It's not installed yet ... but the gas is off I do believe, so it should be okay. I hope. These are professionals, I have to have faith they know what they are doing. Maybe I will go to the park ...

Makes me glad that my water heater does not actually reside inside my apartment. (There's a boiler room in each building.)

A room containing big industrial boilers used to provide heat, hot water, etc.

Hope I didn't come off as sarcastic--that's really the best way I can describe it off the top of my head

No, you didn't come across as sarcastic. I guess I don't get why one would use hot water to make hot water....sounds redundant. I do get the hot water heat though - that one makes sense.

I guess having an entire room devoted to heat is a foreign concept to me. It's almost October and it was like 93 today!!

Here it's 54 degrees, cloudy and windy as hell.

They don't. Boilers run off oil, natural gas, or coal usually. Water's routed in from outside, and rather going directly to the taps, it's piped through the boiler's tank and heated, before being carried off for the heating or tap usage.

'tis 66 and cloudy here. I like it.

The sun was out a little while ago, though.

The problem is that if the boiler dies, the whole building is out of hot water. Happened here this past summer.

Yeah, it's happened here once or twice (well, I don't know what the actual cause was, but we had no hot water). It got fixed pretty quickly, though.

One time, when I was living in PA, I discovered I had no cold water...turned on the tap and got scalding hot water right off the bat. Too hot to brush my teeth, let alone take a shower. (Luckily this happened in the evening and not when I was trying to get ready for work.) I called the maintenance number and they said they'd check it out; don't know if they did anything but it was back to normal an hour later.

Minor update, it's been a bit crazy in my little world lately, another board I frequent made me a mod, and it really sucked up my time for the last few days. Anyway, the install went off without a hitch, and it works SO well! Ahh, the joys of a hot shower!
