  • Teach for America?

Has anyone had any experience with Teach for America? I'm considering applying for next school year (I'd have to apply this month). I meet or exceed all the minimum qualifications of a Bachelor's degree (BA in psych), 2.5 min cumulative GPA (3.03) and US citizenship.

Here's the thing - I've wanted to teach for awhile, but circumstances and the economy have kind of made that dream impossible, if not far-fetched. I get that TfA goes into rough low-income communities and schools. I get that the kids are tough and the environments are tougher. I think that my experience and compassion will serve me well in that capacity.

I lived with troubled kids for 10 months, 120 hours a week. It was hard work, yes, but I've had invaluable experience getting to know them and the struggles they share, how to calmly and safely de-escalate a crisis situation, and how to listen to them. Even now, after leaving 'camp', I keep in touch with some of my kids there and help them work through the struggles they've found after leaving camp. My heart is definitely in it.

My questions are more related to the support that new teachers receive, what kind of teams or groups are assembled, and how to ensure that we're safe or have the ability to stay safe.

    Anyone have thoughts?

I'd say you should seriously look into it. Find out what info and/or chat groups they have available to answer your questions.
    I'm bringing disdain back...with a vengeance.

Oh, and your tool box called...you got out again.
