  • My mini-vacation!

So my friends Neets and Golf Boy are coming to Florida, to visit Golf Boy's parents and then go on a four night Bahamas cruise. They had invited me and Nurse Betty to join them on the cruise, and originally we were going to go, but NB's current situation won't allow for it, and that left me with a decision: do I go on the Bahamas cruise with them, in my own cabin (higher rate than double occupancy, but still reasonable), or do I visit with them in Fort Myers, and return to Fort Myers Beach, a place I went to two summers ago when I needed to get away and fell in love with?

In the end, I decided to visit with them in Fort Myers. There were many pros and cons to either possibility, but in the end it came down to a few things: 1. I'll get to see my youngest niece, which I wouldn't be able to do on the cruise, as she'll be staying with Golf Boy's parents while GB and Neets are on the cruise. 2. I'll get to see GB's parents, who are a blast, and who adore me. 3. I'll get to return to a place I love, rather than do a cruise ship, which I'm not sure about, and do day stops in a place I'd rather visit for days AND nights...and at least one person I trust told me that of all the places she's been, the Bahamas were the worst. 4. Economics. I make most of my income from Tuesday through Friday. The cruise would be Monday through Friday. Going to Fort Myers, I'll leave Thursday night after work, and so miss my Friday shift, and not much else, as I am not always scheduled for Saturdays, I never work Sundays, and my Monday night shifts are my least lucrative (three weeks ago, I made $4 on my Monday night shift!).

So I've been looking online, trying to find a reasonable hotel. GB's parents live in Fort Myers, near Fort Myers Beach, but not actually IN Fort Myers Beach. Originally I was looking for the cheapest nicest place in between them and FMB, but after some serious pondering, I've decided to spend a little extra money and stay in the heart of FMB. Frankly, it's probably a better bet all around, even economically, as GB's parents are not late night people, and several of the days I'm up there, GB and Neets probably won't be going out much at night--but I, of course, will be, enjoying FMB's night life/bar scene after I depart from whatever activities I am enjoying with my friends. Rather than worry about a cab or making a stupid decision, I figure I'll just stay right where I'm going to be doing the night life thing anyway, at a nicer hotel (according to the online reviews) than the place I stayed the last time. Also, apparently there is some pirate festival going on this coming weekend, which I had no idea about, so BONUS!

And, for just $12 more (for the whole stay!), I got a deluxe studio suite with a patio, etc. It's both nicer and larger than a regular room. Now, I don't need nicer, but for once I decided to splurge, rather than going bargain basement. The other advantage is that, if Neets and GB decide to come out with me a night or two, since the suite has two double beds, they can crash out at my place rather than risk driving back to GB's parents' place, or dealing with a cab, etc.

All in all, it's a win win situation! And I am psyched! I have it all planned out. Wednesday, I'm going to pack my bag and my truck, everything but toiletries. Then I'll work my Wednesday night shift, come home, get more sleep than my usual bullshit 4-5 hours, wake up, get ready for work, pack my toiletries into my truck, work my day shift, hop in the Jestermobile, drive up to Lauderdale for dinner at Primanti's (thank you Man vs. Food!), then drive across Florida to check in at my hotel sometime after midnight.

    Yay me!

    This is some odd luck!

In an interesting twist on my vacation, it turns out that, quite unbeknownst to myself, Golf Boy, or Neets, Fort Myers Beach is hosting its fourth annual Pirate Festival the weekend we are going to be there. In an even more interesting twist, it seems the hotel I booked is ground zero for the festivities.

Why yes....yes I think I shall pack a pirate costume. Why ever do you ask?

The last time I was in FMB, I actually stayed at the Lani Kai. Nice place. Not NICE nice, but nice enough for what I needed. I'll actually be just down the road from the LK, right in Times Square. Should be a blast!

Obviously you are familiar with FMB....any recommendations? I know from last time that the Beached Whale rocks, and I have heard about this German place that has a ridiculous selection of beers....would that be Dusseldorf's, or am I being misled by the name?

So far the vacation has been....interesting. The drive up was cool, including a stop at a great eatery, and the late check in was interesting, including a free Guinness and a free upgrade to a suite, both unexpected, but both welcome.

I don't have much computer access, and am currently updating from my Golf Boy's parents' place, but I'll try to post when possible and feasible (and sober enough to type). Tonight Neet and Golf Boy are leaving their daughter with GB's parents, and are going bar hopping with me in Fort Myers Beach.

Some cool things to report, and some depressing things as well.

          More details later!

Apparently last night I tied one on pretty badly, as I don't remember much after a certain bar. My friends filled me in on my drunken idiotic escapades. Apparently I was quite a handful. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), I don't remember this.

*sigh* The joys of being an idiot drunk.

But hell, I'm on vacation, right?
