  • Me and my fat mouth

*sigh* So my brakes are squeaking and have been for awhile. My FIL is talking to my wife and I about our cars and she brings up this fact. He says "Well, they're going to charge out the nose to fix that." I agree and I say "Yeah, but I have changed disk brakes on my old Civic. I can do these, I bet." Later that night, he calls me and tells me my Sunfire only has two disk brakes. The rear set are drum brakes.

I have no idea how to change drum brakes. I've never done drum brakes. We're meeting him tomorrow to get the Buick's oil changed. We're going to check out the brakes then, too. Anyone ever changed drum brakes?
I have a...thing. Wanna see it?

Dunno about disc brakes and drum brakes, but the caliper on my brake pads have been squealing every time I hit the gas whenever I drive, but stop squealing when I apply the brakes. Got new brake pads since the old ones were wearing out anyway, just need to get SO to change them for me.

**Waves** But it's been so long that I forgot how. But I still have the tools.

Get a Haynes Manual for your car. They are the best I have found for doing home repairs and I've been doing them for 30 + years.

drum brakes can be tricky. reassembling them can be something like a puzzle. there's all these springs and hooks you have to put together just right. there are special tools to work on drum brakes, and you can find these tools at sears or whatever.

the best way to do it is one side at a time. that way, if you forget how it goes back together, you can just look at the other side to get back on track
