  • Baseball question..

Is it ever acceptable for a Red Sox fan to root for the Yankees?

The only time I can think of is:
The Red Sox are #1 in their division but only have a 1 or 1/2 game lead.
Yankees are playing whoever is #2.
    Quote Dalesys:

Indeed, I ask a similar question...for I am an Yankees fan yet still respect the Sox (and have no respect for the Angels)

The answer is, "yes, you can," just not very loudly or amongst other fans

When they are playing the team that just knocked you out of the playoffs, yes, it is tolerable.

I'm an Orioles fan, so I hate both Boston and NY. That said whenever it was Yankees vs Redsox I'd cheer for the Sox.

True fans don't bother me, but the bandwagon guys are the 1st ones to come and start with "26 World Championships".

By bandwagon I mean the Yankee "fans" who've never heard of Mickey Mantle, or the Sox fans who don't know who Carl Yazstremski is.

The beer vendors in Baltimore will quiz the "fans" of Boston & NY when they come to town and it's amazing how much they don't know.

Draggar, even in that situation I'd be hard-pressed to root FOR the Yankees.

I'd just root AGAINST the other team.

And Matt, go ahead and quiz me. I bet you I could answer any basic question about the Sawx, and some obscure ones as well. I've been a fan all my life. The bandwagon fans make me sick.

Hmmm.....while I have always supported the Yankees....it wasn't until recently that I have really started enjoying watching baseball......so I will not know all the trivia or stats, yet I consider myself a fan.

I know who Mickey Mantle is, though

Absofreakinlutely NOT. As a Red Sox fan, the only other team you root for is whoever is playing the Yankees.

I know who Mickey Mantle is. Carl Yazstremski, too.

However, I am a Brewers fan.

No, I meant get into the World Series. The dumb Phillies fans in my area thought it was a great idea to riot when the Phillies got into the World Series last year so I'm going to do it to them back! So far I have three other people enlisted in my riot. We plan on tearing down light posts and flipping cars. It'll be glorious!

I couldn't care less about the Yankees or the Red Sox, which are evidently the only two baseball teams in America according to ESPN.

I save all my hatred for the Cubs.

No. No. And once again, no.

If you are a hardcore fan of a team that has a hardcore rival, it is never acceptable to root for that rival. As an Oakland Raiders fan, I would never root for the Denver Broncos. As an Arizona State alum, I would never root for Arizona. I know Michigan fans that would tell you it would be physically incapable for them to root for Ohio State.

Even if it would benefit your team for the rival to win, it is never acceptable for you to actually, actively root for that rival. Not if you take that rivalry and your fandom seriously, anyways.

Draggar, even in that situation I'd be hard-pressed to root FOR the Yankees.

I'd just root AGAINST the other team.
That, on the other hand, is perfectly acceptable. Say you were a Sox fan, and the Yankees were playing the Rays, and it would benefit the Sox for the Yankees to beat the Rays. Then it would be fine for you to root for the Rays to lose. Although the end result is, of course, the same, that would not be the same as you actively rooting for the Yankees.

I don't say all this just because I hate the Yankees (which I do). I say it as a fan of various teams that have hardcore rivalries, and as a fan of sports, and of those hardcore rivalries. I would find it just as unacceptable for a Yankees fan to root for the Red Sox, even if it would benefit the Yankees to do so.

I will never root for the University of Arizona to win at any time in any sport. If, however, they were playing (for example) USC, and USC losing would result in (for another example) Arizona State advancing to the Rose Bowl or such, I would definitely root for USC to lose. I would NOT, however, root for the Wildcats. The very thought is repulsive to me.

There is a huge difference between rooting for the team your rival is playing to lose, and actually rooting for that rival. The second just crosses a line.

I'm pretty sure that cheering for Mizzou or K-State is a crime punishable by death around here, regardless of the circumstances.
