  • I'm Being Followed...or am I?

Last night after work I was convinced some idiot SC had followed me home. Here's why.

I live on a busy highway and my mailbox is on the opposite side of the street from my house. When I get home from work I usually pull up along side my mailbox in my car to get my mail because it's a real PITA to walk across the road. It's 4 lanes right in front of my house and most of the time the traffic is pretty much non-stop.

Anyway, last night I worked til 8PM so it was dark when I got home and stopped for my mail. I had just closed the mailbox when I noticed a van pull up just beyond the driver's door of my car and stop, blocking me so that I couldn't move across the street and get into my driveway.

The driver just sat there for 30 seconds or more so I'm thinking, who the hell did I piss off at the store that they'd follow me home?

Since the van wouldn't move I was getting a bit scared. I put my car in reverse so I could go behind the van to get across the street and the driver backed up, blocking me again. By this time I'm not only scared but I'm pissed. My car is an old POS and I was ready to start ramming the van just to get a point across.

    "I'm not gonna go easily!"

I continued to back up to get behind it and the other driver continued to back up, too. I didn't know what to think or do at this point. There's a very deep ditch alongside the road so I couldn't go that way and it was apparent this idiot wasn't going to let me cross the street.

I sat there for a few seconds when the driver finally backed up enough so that our vehicles where now side-by-side and I could see the window coming down on the passenger side of the van (couldn't see inside-it was too dark). I heard someone yelling but couldn't understand what was being said.

Reluctantly I rolled my window down slightly and at this point the lights from their dashboard were bright enough so that I could see a woman driver and a young teen in the passenger seat. The woman continued to yell something but I still couldn't understand what she was saying. Traffic was going by and it was hard to hear her.

I felt a little less frightened after seeing who was in the van so I rolled my window down more and said, "Pardon me?"

At this point I finally was able to make out what she was saying.

"Do you need some help?" She asked.

I was so pissed that I barked back at her and said, "NO...I was just getting my damn mail."

She said, "Sorry!" and drove off.

I've lived on this road for 23 years and have stopped for my mail thousands of times and never had anything like this happen. I did feel bad after thinking about it because she was only trying to be helpful.

I guess after working in retail and dealing with the public for so many years I have become a bitch!

well I would call it a pretty healthy paranoia.
I am by no means an easy target for people but I would be thinking of escape routes too if someone did that.

Good samaritin, yes. Smart samaritin? Not so much. Blocking somebody in like that doesn't give the impression that you're there to 'help'.

...I'd have given it one min of me trying to back up/pull forward to get away... and then called the cops.... because I am paranoid like that..... I'm a little wisp of a thing with no real muscles to speak of...yeah not taking that chance.

Plus, from the description of the road, it sounds like a good way to cause an accident.

No cell phone but I would have probably considered it if I'd had one. I'm a little thing too and what really stunk was the fact that it was a full-panelled van and I could not see inside it at all when she was parked just beyond my door.

Also, since she could see me backing up...WHY back up too? Obviously I was still able to drive the car.

It was all just too weird.

See that's my issue with the lady in this story. She saw you backing up, and chose to do the same thing. I mean, obviously you could drive. And she should have been aware enough to notice you were trying to MOVE AWAY.

Depending on the day I had, I might have done more than just inform the lady I was getting my mail. In your case I believe my words would be; "Yeah, I pulled over to pick up my mail, and when I went to turn into my driveway some idiot blocked me in. I tried to drive away from them, but they kept following me as I backed up. It's really damn annoying. Think you could help with that?"

But then again I'm Queen Bitch when people get in between me and my driveway, especially after the accident this past summer.

For some reason I can imagine telling the story to her friends and someone responding with; "Yes, Margie, but you did cut her off when she was trying to back away. You probably scared the girl."

Definitely NOT smart. I would pull up behind and put the hazards on and check, or pull up alongside (if Traffic allowed, and being out here in cornfield country it would be easy).

                    I would be very paranoid.
