  • Useless facts about my cinematic tastes because I'm bored

*I have a strange crush on Norman Bates (1960s), Michal Myers (1970s Halloween--I love Rob Zombie his Myers just didn't feel right to me...and I freaking hated Laurie), and Dr. Lecter. I discovered this in the middle of a horror film class and my professor (and adviser) teased me about it for years.

    *I love Bollywood movies.

*I'm the only girl I know who did not grow up watching Dirty Dancing. The first time I ever saw it was a few weeks ago...and yeah, I love it now.

*I tend to refuse to watch the usual "omigod every girl needs to see this" movies while they are at the height of their popularity...then I'll catch it on tv or on netflix and fall in love with myself I know, the whole "it's popular so it sucks" mentality is childish...I'm working on that.

*I actually rented Twilight just to see how much I would hate it. The answer is "a lot." (Surprisingly I kind of like the novel; my mom lent it to me a few months ago and I can see why the book would be so popular with teenage girls)

*I will happily sit down and watch the entire Anne of Green Gables series and followed by Evil Dead.

*I'm really starting to dislike Tim Burton. I love the stage version of Sweeney Todd and I think his adaptation falls flat on its ass. Seriously dude, we get that your wife is hot and goth and all, but please stop shoving her into lead roles she can not pull off.
....yeah, I'm still going to see Alice in Wonderland because I'm a hypocrite.

*My boyfriend thinks Worst Witch is a horrible movie and now I may have to rethink my relationship with him

Anyone else have any strange movie tastes?

Those 70's movies were about the only thing in common that my dad & I shared.

The SyFy channel is so much worse too. LOVE IT!!

While Helena Bonham Carter wouldn't have been my first choice for Mrs. Lovett (that would be Bernadette Peters, btw), I thought she did a good job with it. No, she doesn't have a spectacular singing voice, but to me it fit with the character. And Burton's Sweeney Todd was the best film adaptation of a musical that I'd seen in a long, long time. Revived any hope I had for the genre.

              ...and Dr. Lecter.
It may amuse you to know that this was my third year running dressing up as Dr. Hannibal Lecter during our Fantasy Fest event down here (sort of a long Halloween/Mardi Gras party). Apparently I do it well, as it not only creeps people out at an alarming rate, I actually took second place at a celebrity lookalike contest two years ago.

                Cheesy 70s disaster movies.
Oh yes . . . I do enjoy those, as well as I have a taste for those equally cheesy 70's trucker flicks too.

As far as the disaster flicks go, so far I've got the following on DVD:

                Airport . . . 2disc Terminal Pack (entire series)
                The Towering Inferno
                The Poseidon Adventure
Smokey and the Bandit Pursuit Pack (entire collection)

Just wish I could find Earthquake and When Time Ran Out on DVD. Speaking of When Time Ran Out, that's considered by some to be a somewhat unofficial sequel to The Towering Inferno.

Kinda is in a way: You have both Paul Newman AND William Holden in similar roles. Major difference is they've got different women on their arms and they're on a island with a volcano instead of a skyscraper.

And, a former football co-starred in a supporting role: OJ Simpson was in the Towering Inferno. Alex Karras was in When Time Ran Out (just a few short years before he played the sheriff in Porky's.)

Both screenplays were written by Stirling Silliphant (as well as the original Poseidon Adventure.)

But then I'm also seeking White Line Fever and High-Ballin' too . . . neither one has been released so far to my knowledge . . .

I also like biographical miniseries too . . . or pretty much anything based on real life events. I can sit all day and watch "The Right Stuff" or "Kennedy" or "Robert Kennedy and His Times."

Or those lavish time period miniseries from the 70's and 80's . . . especially if they're centered around either the American Revolution or the Civil War. Or anything related to the Tudors of England . . . I seem to have this fascination with Elizabeth I . . .

Throw all that in a pot and that's one pretty unique set of tastes.

You should really check out HBO's "John Adams" miniseries. I watched it when it was on tv, but they released it on DVD as well. It was awesome!

I, too, resist the "YOU GOTTA SEE THIS MOVIE" recommendation that everyone tends to give to me. It has to be really something for me to go to the theatre to watch (mainly because I'm tired of the general public's behavior in movie theatres), and if everyone has already seen it, the end up telling me the story anyways.

I prefer finding smaller (non-Hollywood), independant movies to watch. You have to sift through a lot of crap, but when you find something cool, it is worth it.

I guess it goes back to my days at the video store... People would rent the big movies regardless of the quality... but I'd always watch the smaller movies that would come out and try to recommend them if people were looking for something else (which they would, if the "big" movies were rented).

Thanks so much, Jester. *kiss on cheek* But I'll have to wait until after the holidays before I can start getting those. I've got them bookmarked so I can find them later.

I missed that one, but the one last year about Elizabeth I was very good. Helen Mirren was outstanding and Jeremy Irons is unfailingly smooth as the Earl of Leicester. . . .

And speaking of the relationship between Elizabeth and Leicester, there's a really good novel that came out back int he late 70's by Victoria Holt that discusses it from the POV of Leicester's 2nd wife, Letitia Knollys (formerly Lady Essex.)

My Enemy The Queen is well worth the read . . . not only did Elizabeth have a relationship with Robert Dudley (Earl of Leicester) but also Letitia's eldest son, Robert Devreaux (2nd Earl of Essex.)

The book has been out of print for some time, but I managed to find a hardcover copy at a yard sale a couple of years ago and snatched it up.

Huh, kinda surprised you couldn't pick it up in a bargain bin somewhere. Can't remember if I got it at WM, KM, or a local record store that had a DVD bargain bin, but it was one of the 3...a $5 special.

Ever seen Volcano in New York? Delightfully cheesy! Aftershock is good too, bit more modern.

I'm totally this way too. When people are going crazy over a movie I tend to go the other way. As far as theaters go, for me it's a misery to try to put up with the people that go to them. I haven't even been to one since early in 2000.

One thing that will always grab my attention as far as movies go is when I hear the phrase "Worst movie ever" or "directed by Uwe Boll". My morbid curiosity makes it almost irresistible.
