  • Problem with glasses

I am new to wearing eyeglasses. I've put off getting them for years until finally the strain in my right eye was enough for me to go get an exam. OD diagnosed me with astigmatism and now I wear glasses.

After what seemed to be the usual breaking in period of a couple days, my eyes and brain got fairly used to them.

However on the third day of wearing them, something strange happened.

Without actually touching it, my nose feels kind of numb. At first, I thought the glasses may have been too tight and were cutting off circulation , but they don't actually FEEL tight when wearing them.

However, when I actually touch my nose, I don't notice any difference. I was kind of rooting around my face to see if it was a case of seeming like the problem was with my nose, but generated elsewhere.

So I kind of pressed gently down on the upper right area of my eye and when I do that the numb sensation amplifies.

Anyone have any clue as to what this may be and if this is still part of the normal transition? Should I keep wearing the glasses or should I wait until this feeling goes away before trying again?

I guess I mainly need to know since it's the weekend and the OD isn't open and I was told that I should wear the glasses the majority of the time.

It's been about 8 hours since I've worn them, and the feeling is still there.

I know this was worded poorly, but I hope you get the gist.

I have never heard of that before...

If JuniorMintz doesn't find this thread you might try PMing her; she might be able to tell you if this might be related to the glasses or not. Otherwise, call your doc on Monday.

Do you have a LensCrafters nearby? They're open on weekends and they might be able to answer a question. (Even if you're not a patient there; my mom got her glasses fixed for free once and she didn't buy them there.) Worth a shot if you're concerned.

I've worn glasses for 30 years now (now I really feel old!) and I've never heard of that before either.

I can't tell from your post exactly where on your eye you're pressing. If it's at the inside corner/bridge of your nose, I do know that there's a nerve there. That's why people will squeeze the bridge of their nose when they have a headache.

I would say not to wear the glasses until you find out what's going on. I doubt you'll have any negative affect by not wearing them, other than maybe having to adjust to them again.

I'm blind too. What it sounds like to me is this: Has anyone ever pointed at the brdge of your nose, right between your eyes, and even from as much as an inch or 2 away, you can "feel" it?? It's that sort of numbish tickly sensation that can spread through your whole nose. If you've never had that, try doing it to yourself without your glasses on. When I wear certain frame shapes, that sensitive spot (sometimes called a third eye) will set off constantly. This led me to choosing to wear contacts. I only wear my glasses on occasion now.

        It's weird, I know.

I'm not familiar with this phenomenon and I've lived in glasses for over 30 years myself (started wearing them when I was 10 1/2.)

I'm used to them . . . and whenever I get a new pair and the prescription has changed, it doesn't seem to take my eyes any time to get used to them.

I have, however, noticed that my eyes are not "backwards compatible" as in when I tried on an older pair of glasses recently, my eyes couldn't quite adjust to them.

Might need the nosepiece adjusted. I wore classic Windsors for years (Ghandi spectacles with no nosepieces, the bridge sat right on the bridge of my nose with no padding) and I thought I'd do something wild and crazy and go with some frameless spectacles that had nosepieces this time. They did take some getting used to. I had no numbness like you are having, but the nosepieces drove me nuts after years of not wearing them. I had to adjust them a lot.

JM would probably know, you should PM her. Or call the place you got them and tell them.

Tingling and numbness are probably not normal. Call your eye doc. I've been wearing glasses since 6th grade* and I have never even heard of what you're experiencing. I did get horrible sores on occasion from the nosepieces, though. Hopefully yours is something simple, but definitely call your doctor.

*I started wearing mostly contacts in 8th grade, but I still wear my glasses on days off when I'm too lazy to put in the contacts.
