    Big news in the German shepherd world.

    This was passed recently.

    USA (United Schtzhund association) has made it so you cannot a member of USA *and* WDA (Working Dog Association - part of the GSDCA (German Shepherd Dog Club of America).

    Some are saying "big whoop" now but this could be huge down the road.

    GSDCA-WDA has long supported American breeding styles of GSDs (AKC backed - they've allowed puppy mills in, they breed to hype and don't do much for working ability).

    USA supports German style (working ethics, dogs have to be titled before they can be bred etc..).

    There has been talks, especially with German-style shepherd people to split the GSD breed into two breeds in the USA (United States) - especially with the American Kennel Club (AKC).

    This is the first step in splitting the breed into two breeds - who knows what they'll be called.

    All I want is breeding for healthy dogs.

    Okay, healthy dogs with predictable traits would be good. (So I could choose a breed that would make a great lapdog, but my best friend can choose a breed that loves going on walks with her, and my brother can choose a great family-pet dog...)

    *sigh*

    C'mon, dog show clubs. Get with the program. *HEALTHY* first, traits second.

    Ability to make money by selling to pet stores/ability to parade around and look cute should be much lower priorities, if at all.


    ... and yeah, from here on I should take it to Fratching.

    So Draggar, which group, if either, is going for 'healthy dogs first'?

      It all depends on the breed - with German shepherds USA would be a better choise (your best choice would be to import from Europe - which would usually cost just as much as a good pet here).

      I've found out that all this is to promote the person who added the amendments, too. I've having a discussion with a GSD expert (known in the "industry" as Mr. GSD about it and he knows all parties involved). It seems like this is not about the dogs, sadly.

      It seems like USA has lost a lot of members over this now due to being extremely limited in size now (as compares to the GSDCA-WDA).

        Personally, I much prefer the look of the solid, very gently sloped topline of the German lines. The GSDs you see in the show ring nowadays are getting to look so terrible you can't tell if they're walking or just dragging their rears on the ground. I have no idea how such a steeply sloping topline can be healthy or even functional.

          Its not - how many AKC champions also have schutzhund titles? Very few.

          We don't even need to get into Sieger ratings, herding ability, or even agility.

          Most AKC confirmation people just concntrate on confirmation (agility people will also do obedience often, though). If you don't believe me - how many dogs have been invited to Eukanuba for al 3 events?

          None. My wife wanted to be the first - we had a Finnish spitz who was good at obedience, looked great, and actually had the drive to easily get a BH, maybe even a SchH1 (so agility would have been easy, too). Not much competition in the Finkie ring, too. Too bad there were major issues with this puppy and Kiri.

            Bleh. It's sad is what it is. I like German Shepherds though of course I'm more a boxer/bully breed/doberman kinda girl. I like short-coated, solid, athletic dogs myself. I've kicked around doing Shutzhund with a good boxer or doberman but as far as AKC showing is concerned...meh.

              my husband wants a GS, I want a rottie-we have both determined that sadly the AKC has so damaged the breed we will be heading to Germany to get our dogs-we want healthy dogs, not necessarily "pretty show dogs"-and they will be altered, we don't want surprise puppies....
              Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

                I'd love to watch a good Dobie do Schutzhund. My wife's friend has a mali who is great at it and it is like watching art. Dobies are sleek and have "that look" on their face (intelligence, respect, very regal) that the majority of breeds do not have. While GSDs are great at the sport (and dominate it), I'm sure watching a Dobie would be fascinating. IMO they're one of the most intelligent breeds outside of the herding group (and my wife was shocked when I told her I wouldn't mind a Dobie even though I'm a shepherd person).

                With either - import from Europe or look for German lines here in the US. A good question to ask - do they breed to FCI / Sieger standards? I know some good GSD breeders in the US, PM me with your location (general) and I'll see if I know any in your area. Unfortunately, i don't know any good rottie breeders. I know one who has good temperaments but her ethics are as low as they can get and the others are too unstable (IMO).

                  Just an update but the USA club has already lost a lot of members and WDA has picked up a lot from this.

                  It seems like USA is going to have some very hard times ahead of them unless they repeal the bylaw, but even that may be too little too late.

                    Yeah, could see that coming a mile away. Hopefully they've learned their lesson and don't try and pass any similarly stupid bylaws.
