  • Vacuum Cleaner Help

So, for Christmas I want a new vacuum cleaner, before Khan starts crawling and picking up stuff off the floor to ram into his little black hole of a mouth (I call him Gator Baby because he's recently discovered how to chomp, chomp, chomp on anything that comes near his face).

We have a cat that sheds like crazy, and I am also very sheddy, so we need something powerful and preferably light and maneuverable.

Any suggestions? Dysons are a little pricey but I have seen some Bissels and Hoovers that get very positive reviews. Can any vacuum owners enlighten me?

We've got a Kenmore upright, and considering the mess here (two cats, a longhair and a shedding MONSTER shorthair, two very long haired humans, AND a business involving faux fur that generates disturbing amounts of fluff) I'd say they're pretty good machines, otherwise ours would have had problems by now.

We have a Kirby. Today it would cost moe than my car (and it probbaly did when my in-laws bought it a long time ago). It does a great job but its getting old (we estimate that it is over 30 years old).

I also inherited a commercial grade Hoover - this thing sucks, literaly. I've never seen a vacuume pick up dog and cat hair as well as this one even without any extra sprays etc.

I think this is the one:

BUT - here's a suggestion that we used to do to get hair up and out of the carpet:
Maybe a 15 part water, 1 part fabric softener in a spray bottle and spray (or a heavy mist) over the carpet and let it sit for about 30 mintues. It did a lot when we had a lower-end vacuume.

Disclaimer - I work occasionally at a combo vacuum repair/sale and computer repair/sale shop...

That being said, the top 3 vacuums we see for repair - Dirt Devil, Hoover, Eureka. Our vac tech used to do carpet cleaner repair until the Hoover and Bissell units came out - cheaply made, and when they have a problem, they're very difficult to repair.

Current Kenmore vacuums are based on Panasonic, which are very good basic vacs. Buy the equivalent Panasonic model, though - If you need repair, some Kenmore parts are different from the same Panasonic (don't know why) and are only available at Sears.

IMO, the best vac is the one I have now - a Riccar upright vac. They are only offered at certain independent vacuum stores, and you'll pay a little more over the Hoovers and Eurekas, but you'll get a vacuum that lasts, American made, and has a lot of power - so much that even I has to get used to my low-end upright vac trying to yank my arm out. It feels like it's self-propelled, but it's not, and that extends to all their models.

They even have a lightweight vac like an Oreck, the SupraLite, that was highly rated by Consumer Reports.

I have a long haired, shedding cat and a long haired, shedding daughter.

I have a Dyson Pet vac. I love it. Sometimes, yes, the hair/fur gets curled around the rollers underneath, but when you unplug said vac, and cut the hair/fur/whatever else wrapped around the rollers, it's just like new! I love it.
