Yesterday I was at my grandparent's house when our cat, Pixie, was up on my lap.
Pixie is 19 years old, we've had her since I was six. Purring, happy, healthy, eyes clear, no signs of old age except some fur loss on the back of her rear legs.
She suddenly just rolled over and fell off my lap, hitting the ground. She struggled to get back up but could barely move her left side, and was walking in circles with balance problems. She was able to make it to her food and water dish and tried to eat...
We took her to the vet, and they determined she had a stroke. My grandparents made the decision to put her down.
When the other cats were put down, we could tell they were on their way out. They were moving slowly, losing weight, not eating as much, but still happy. Pixie was as spry and playful as she was ten years ago, still chasing strings, still fetching paper balls, still rubbing up against you and giving you kisses when you pet her.
From happy and healthy on my lap to being put down in less than an hour...I'm just in complete shock and on the verge of tears for the last 24 hours.
RIP Pixie, you were a better friend than most people.

At least you now that she lived a long life filled with all the love you and your family gave her for those 19 years.
