  • My favorite part of this time of year...

It's the unhealthiest thing in existence and serves no purpose other than pleasure (and alcohol for some).

    EGG NOG.

While the store-bought stuff is nice, nothing better than cracking an egg or two in a cup of milk with 4 TBSP of sugar, 1 TSP of vanilla and a pinch of nutmeg.

(For a very simple one). This time of year my submersion mixer gets more usage than the rest of the year combined.

Almond extract is a nice addition - oddly since I don't like almonds (or any nuts).

Yes, it is unhealthy, loaded with fat and sugar, plus eating raw eggs isn't the healthiest thing for you but it is so good!!

I hate nog. But I've only had the store-bought. I saw pasteurized eggs in the store the other day; maybe you could use those.

I've never read that in any recipe but I'll give it a try!

I really want to like eggnog. I love rum.

I had a glass once the first Christmas my husband I were dating. His sister served it to me.

It was actually really surprisingly delicious, but since then, it's all I can do to gag a glass of it down.

I don't know what her secret was.
I don't think it was homemade.

As for the raw eggs in homemade stuff, I have read that, as long as your eggs are fresh, and you handle it carefully, there shouldn't be a huge problem. Pasteurized eggs are a good idea too.

I've seen recipes where the eggnog gets cooked.
I've also heard that the alcohol helps kill the nasties, too (although I don't know how reliable that bit of advice is).
Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.

            Ew.

            I'll take the rum, though.

That doesn't surprise me - some of my ice cream recipes use eggs and they have me cook them - just under a boil.

maybe it's a regional thing-I've never seen a recipe that used the whites.....

Hood eggnog is alright, but what I absolutely LOVE is Shaw Farms eggnog that we get at a local farm. Typically a gallon doesn't last very long (note to self: dip into my props fund this year so we can get more than one bottle).

I have only one thing to add: egg nog milkshakes.

I take it you're a regular visitor to Jester's Altar of Rum?

As for me, I tend to go for the grape juice over Christmas. Not wine. Sparkly grape juice (two reasons: 1) I can't stand the taste of wine, 2) medication)
