  • Jerk on Cash Cab

I was reminded of this by orcprincesses comment in this thread that a SC once told her "it's nice that people without degrees can get work too."

So, who loves Cash Cab? I do!! Me and the BF watch it pretty often. It's a fun show and we love Ben! Still can't figure out what the license plate means... but oh well. Anyway, last night we were watching an episode and this guy and his wife got into the cab. Ben did his over-the-top "Brooklyn" accent (to try and fool them in case they knew who he was by sight?) And asked them where they wanted to go. The woman laughed and asked if he was an actor. The husband then said, "If he were an actor then he'd be a waiter!" So blah blah, it's Cash Cab, they play and get some money racked up. Two times after the guy answers a (pretty easy) question he says "that's what a college education does!" and also remarks on how he's a scientist. As if being a scientist makes you more knowledgeable about pop culture?? I feel like you can sometimes tell if Ben likes or is annoyed by the contestants, and he seemed really irritated by this guy. I was too! This guy was really snooty about how educated he was.

So they get to their destination. They can pick if they want to go double or nothing, so of course the guy is totally okay with it, because he is OF COURSE going to get the question right, being a college-attending scientist and all. He's so smug at this point it's just freaking hilarious, because he's acting like he's about the only person who ever won money on Cash Cab. Unfortunately I can't remember the question they were asked! But guess what?

    He got it wrong

We laughed pretty hard after that. He seemed pretty embarrassed. I just hate when people who have a college degree think they they are SO much better and smarter and more important than everybody else. Personally I know a lot of people with college degrees who work in jobs too "low" for a college-educated person to have (yeah right), and I know a lot of people without them who are very intelligent... or at least smart enough to win Cash Cab!

Going to say this up front, so no surprises. This shouldn't become a degree-bashing thread either. It's like everything else. A degree doesn't change who a person is. They're still an ass, with or without it.

That said, I've never heard of Cash Cab. Sounds interesting. Too bad you couldn't remember the question, I'd like to know if I could answer it

Fellow Cash Cab lover here! One of the things mom and I are trying to figure out is where he tends to hang out so we can stalk the cab next time we venture into Manhattan

I've seen a few contestants who get all smug and then botch it on the video bonus question (amusingly, I've gotten most of them). Then there are the ones who start screaming at the top of their lungs every time they get a question right; how does Ben stand that? (I can give kids a pass, but not anyone over 12)

Broom, it's on Discovery Channel in the evenings mostly I think.

Sorry! I didn't mean to make it sound that way. I'm trying for a degree myself, actually I just don't like when people use that as an excuse to feel superior to someone. I bet most of us know how annoying it is to have to serve someone who automatically assumes we are uneducated because we work in a customer service position...

It's a trivia-type game show inside a taxi cab. If you get the questions right, you get money (and a free cab ride). If you get so many wrong, you get dumped on the curb. It's on the Discovery Channel.

I seem to recall seeing a few contestants that did just that. I think that's why Ben puts on the accents, as a lot of times it's clear the passengers don't see his face until the game starts.

This reminds me of many years ago, I was watching "teen week" on Jeopardy!. And these kids they had on there were very, very smart.

              Book smart.

However, one question came up that everyone in the room knew, but not one of the contestants could get right. Keep in mind, this was the mid-90's. The question: "This band had a huge hit with their album 'Appetite for Destruction.'"

That's right. Not one of these kids, who were answering some really tough questions, had the foggiest fucking clue who Guns n' Roses were. Hilfuckinglarious!

Cash Cab is great. I like that I do actually learn something when watching. (And yes, I am excited when I do better than the nervous people playing)

What gets me is at the end there is a comment about some contestants were (I think the term is) pre screened.

This makes me wonder just how random it is.

I have to laugh at the people that attempt to put their entire value in something they have accomplished in life vs being a fully rounded person. (It isn't just degreed people - sometimes it is the job or some talent they have)

I wonder that too... I think sometimes the surprise is real; that or there are some fine actors in New York! But every once in a while I feel like people will get in the cab and then be waiting for the lights to start flashing because they know it's coming. But I doubt they have auditions or anything... if they do then I'm there

I'm sure some people have to be prescreened, don't want drunk asses or weirdos or some dude bent on robbery getting in the car.

On that note, I love cashcab. I don't watch it often because game shows aren't my thing, but this one I will on occasion. I just like how well rounded the questions are. It's not like some shows that only ask pop culture questions, or only things one could know from going to college. It's the most unbiased game show I've seen on tv, IMO.

I used to watch Jeopardy a lot, but now Cash Cab is the only game show I try to catch regularly. Mom hates game shows and even she'll sit down if it's on. I always learn something new even if it is only trivia.

It's also possible that some people will answer "no" when asked if they want to play; afterall, they are being taped and broadcast.

It's fun to watch. I forget what channel they have it on, but sometimes I watch it here and there. Basically this guy takes people on his taxi in NY and quizzes them and with each question they get right, they get money for it. If they get three strikes the game is over and they get dropped off. But if they make it to the final round and destination, the guy asks if they want to take the money and run or answer the question and risk either keeping all the money and whatever other amount they would also win with it or lose it all if their answer is wrong.

Cash cab is awesome! I learn a bunch and am sometimes surprised by what I know.

Off topic rant: This thread reminded me of this girls FB status update that came up on my page not too long ago. Her status was ranting and raving about how Sheetz charged her for honey mustard for her sandwich. Her status then ended with "Thank God for degrees from good colleges.".....which left me with a WTF face b/c it had nothing to do with honey mustard...Shes an ass. I near deleted her for that. I keep her around only to read how dumb she really is.... for my entertainment.
