  • Unusual instruments

We went to an amazing German restaurant in town last night for my Grandpa's birthday. They generally have live entertainment, but this was amazing.

The videos are all links: My camera was dying, so I wasn't able to get the entire songs I did get a pretty decent sampling though.

*edited with links that actually work*

    A waltz played on cowbells.

The Blue Danube on a turkey baster.

Edelweiss on a hand saw with a violin bow.

Yeah, this dude's amazingly talented, it was so awesome! The only thing better than the entertainment was the food...mmm.

We can't have a discussion about unusual instruments without mentioning The Yard Dogs, a Florida band that I have seen down here a few times. They are a trio, and they rock, but they are....different.

I mean, it's odd enough for a rock band to use an accordion or a banjo, I guess. But then they get weirder. First we have this, which I guess is not that unusual, but for a rock band, it seems a bit weird. I guess you would call it a washboard, and he wears it over his chest.

But none of the above comes close to the Rhumba Box, which is an instrument the Yard Dogs invented after seeing a much smaller instrument like it somewhere in the Caribbean. They went about building the larger version, which if you notice, the guy plays with a protective glove, much like the ones oyster shuckers wear.

By the way, somehow I managed to end up on their website in one of their pictures. If you're bored, you can find it.

I've heard people playing saws like that before (they make such a weird sound ) but never a turkey baster.

FTW (especially for the geeks out there). If that doesn't get your fancy, maybe something for the season?
