  • Okay, imagine you are hearing the music from Raising Arizona while you read this...

So, my great Aunt Sally's house? It's gone.

It was an old house in a crappy locale. So someone bought it and moved it. Jacked it up and put it on a truck. It was a pretty good size house, a one story farmhouse type of thing. Sort of like a Craftsman.

Anyways, apparently the guy who bought it was

    1. Tired of waiting around for the proper permits.
    2. Batshit crazy.

What is supposed to happen when you move a house down a highway is that the move goes down at two am, with the proper permits and a police escort.

What actually did happen was the guy went down there in the middle of the day, hopped in the truck, and drove the hell off, flattening street signs and ripping down power lines in his wake.

I don't know what the guy looked like, but I am picturing John Candy for some reason.

And I am really sorry for this rather anticlimactic end, but the house is somewhere else on some piece of property I am not familiar with now. Whether or not it is structurally sound I cannot say.

So yeah. That's a highlight of the Family News I learned while hanging with the cousins tonight.

    is right!

Please, be sure to update us on this if your family shares any more info, such as the charges this moron will be facing.

Several years ago, (maybe 5 or 6 or so) I witnessed about 3 hours worth of a house move. IIRC, it was probably to about the halfway point or so of the move. Very fascinating.

This particular house was originally situated one block east of my apartment building, and this time of year with the leaves off of the trees, I could see part of the back of it from my front window. It was being moved, because the grocery store across the street from me bought the lot to expand their parking.

Ironically, about ten years ago now, the guy who owned the property that the house I rented at the time, (I had owned it for several years, and ran into severe financial problems, so he had paid off what I owed) was trying to buy the house by the store, with the intent of moving it onto the front part of the large lot, where I was living. During the move of the house, it actually passed by the property where I had previously lived.

He later was laid-off from work, and ended up having to scrap the rest of his plans. He'd already done a major remodel of the existing tiny house (the one I was living in), and he was going to have to sell, and of course, I had to move.

So, in May 2000, I moved a few blocks away to where I'm at now, and it was kind of fun those first few years to think about, this time of year when I could see a little bit of the back of the big house from my apartment window, that if things had gone as originally planned, I would have been looking at a similar, though very much closer view, out the window of the little house!

One of my favorite TV shows is "Haulin House" on DIY network. They show the prep work and the move. It fascinates me to watch them do things like that.
