  • I. Hate. Cats!

So, the Most Important Game of the Year. Arizona State vs. Arizona. Arizona is 7-3 and has been ranked in the Top 25 at various times this year. ASU is 4-7 and, to be honest, sucks. That being said, it's a rivalry game, and records be damned....GO ASU!

Now, cheering this way for this game is interesting in a bar in these parts, as everyone else was pretty much focused on the Florida-Florida State game. Me, I was the only Zonie in the bar, but people definitely noticed me....I get very emotional and passionate about this game, and damn if I don't have a voice that can be heard.

Arizona jumps out to a 14-0 lead. Fuck. But ASU battles back, and with about 2 minutes left, ties the game at 17 up. Arizona gets the ball, and ASU forces a punt with a minute and change left. Hallefuckinglujah! Either we drive for the winning points or, at worst, we force overtime.

Of course, I forgot about the third option, where we muff the punt, Arizona recovers, and kicks the winning field goal to end the game.

I enrolled at ASU in 1988, and since then I have never once missed the Arizona State-Arizona game. Not once. No matter where I am or what I am doing. I do not work on this day, and I find a way to watch the game, no matter where I have to go or what bar I have to be in. They could stick me in a side closet with a mini-tv, and if that was the only option, I would watch it like that and be happy. (This actually happened to me once for a Raiders game.) In all that time, I have never been so nauseated by a loss as I was by this one. This fucking sucked.

I am so looking forward to basketball season so we can kick their ass!

    I HATE the fucking Wildcats!

    GO SUN DEVILS!

That's cause your cheering for the wrong Wildcats.
You must not be paying attention. I'm not cheering for ANY Wildcats. I'm a Sun Devil. The only time I have ever rooted for any Wildcats was when the University of Kentucky Wildcats faced the University of Arizona Wildcats in the national title game in college basketball. I rooted for the UK Wildcats, and the fuckers let me down, allowing those pussies from the U of A to win their first national title.

In semi-related news, a University of Florida fan sitting near me at the bar today at one point tried to boast, saying, "You know, they were playing SEC football before Arizona was even a state."

JESTER: "Really? When was the SEC founded?"
    FLORIDA FAN: "In the twenties."
JESTER: "Interesting. Since Arizona became a State in 1912, and they have been playing football in Arizona since the 1880's."

We were both partially wrong. The SEC was founded in 1932, 20 years after Arizona became a State. And they have been playing football (at least the Territorial Cup game between ASU and U of A) since 1899. But in the end, the dude was wrong. They have NOT been playing SEC football since before Arizona was a State, thank you very much.

Fuck the Cats. That is all.

Huh. Today is Utah vs Utah. BYU and UofU are battling it out and it's getting rather tense in here. See, when Byu and the U play, we're allowed to wear our game colors to work. The fans in here are 50/50... there have been some bitter fights in here over it. I however, was not watching and don't know who one. Oh well.

Fans in Jayhawk territory are also eagerly awaiting basketball season.....

When there was the "Governor's Cup" game (KU vs. KState) this year, we all knew we would lose. And that in a few months we will wipe the Fieldhouse floor with KState.

The bar I was watching the game in was about 70/30 Florida/Florida State, with fans of other schools scattered about.

I was the only person really watching the ASU-UofA game....but a lot of people were aware of it, because of how LOUD I can get during this game.

My friend Little Red joined me near the end of the game, and though she knows me well, she seemed a bit surprised by my vocality. I guess she has never watched this game with me. It is the ONE game of the year that no matter WHAT, I Will Not Miss!

            Fucking Cats. Blech.

Our big rivalry game was played in October. Wisconsin has the Axe and Minnesota doesn't...again.

Congrats to the Badgers! Sucks for you, Gophers.

Sadly, us Sun Devils not only share the Gophers' colors (maroon and gold), but also their fate in our respective 2009 rivalry games.

I'm just relieved: from the title, I was expecting a rant on these.

Your team reminds me of the Houston Texans. No wonder the bars are twice as busy on Saturdays (UT, LSU, even University of Houston) than Sundays around here.

How does my team correlate to the Texans?

If it's because of the difference in interest, you have to remember, I am IN Florida, where there are a lot more UF and FSU (and even UM) fans than there are ASU or UofA fans. Being the only one in the bar watching that game was not even remotely surprising for me.

I am a cactus in a grove of palm trees.

Your team corrolates to the Texans because it sounds like they both have a tendency to make stupid mistakes that lose the game.

The last time they played, they blew a 17 point lead, including two touchdowns in 14 seconds, one off an interception. They also lost two games in a row by missing field goals.

A lot of people around here start the season by cheering for the Texans, so it's not about a difference in interest. I guess my second comment was mostly me thinking out loud--I'd always noticed but never quite figured out why everyone would pack the bars with the good TVs all day Saturday but not so much on Sunday.

Your Texans are in the playoff hunt, or at least in contention.

My Sun Devils finished the season 4-8, are not going to a bowl for the second straight year, lost to our rivals for the second straight year, and our rivals are going to a bowl for the second straight year.

It's beyond a few stupid mistakes.

The old joke in Tempe used to be that you could tell if it was Saturday or Sunday simply by checking the traffic around Sun Devil Stadium. If there was a lot of traffic, the Sun Devils were playing, so it was Saturday. If there wasn't, the Cardinals were playing, so it was Sunday.

Of course, now that the Cardinals are relatively good, have a bigger fan base, and play in their own stadium in Glendale, the joke really doesn't apply any more.

Here in Key West, the sports bars are busy on both Saturdays and Sundays....but that is because so many (perhaps even most) of the people here are from somewhere else, so we all want to see our teams.

I guess theoretically they are, and most of their games this month are against easier teams. However, they still have to face the Patriots, and the other wild card teams are looking much better. I'm thinking of the Titans, Broncos and Ravens. I think everyone would be happy with their first winning season. Two years ago was their first non losing season, and that was a big deal.

Not quite as bad as your team, but the thing that gets me is that the Texans just seem to give up. They'll play well for the first half, or even the first 3 quarters, but they they just sit on cruise control while the other team starts playing well and wins.

Reminds me of a joke I heard shortly after the Ravens moved to Baltimore. What's the difference between a dollar and the Ravens? You get four quarters from a dollar.
