  • Now that Turkey Day's over...

What do you plan on having for Christmas dinner? When I was a kid ours could either be turkey or ham, depending on the cooks' whims. I have no idea where I will be, or who's cooking, but I want orange-cranberry relish for sure. I'm especially interested in what the vegetarians on the board will be having.

Our meal rarely changes. Ham, Turkey breasts (we have an inlaw that cannot eat ham), Scalloped potatoes, sweet potatoes (personally, yuck!) Picked veggies, stuffing, broccoli casserole, and probably more stuff I'm missing.

Hmm, good question. We are going to my husband's family's annual Christmas get-together, and I don't really know what the tradition is, as this will be my first year attending. I will probably bake something while I'm there, since I love to bake and I haven't met anyone who hasn't loved what I bake.

I imagine we'll probably have some kind of get-together with our D&D ground, like we did for Thanksgiving over this last weekend, sometime around Christmas/New Year's. I will probably cook, but nothing as extravagant as I did for Thanksgiving -- that was fun, but I don't wanna do it again in a month. I'm thinking either homemade lasagna or some kind of crock pot dish (in other words, something that feeds a crowd using only a few pots.) I recently found a recipe for a beef roast made with cranberry jelly and a few other things in a slow cooker, which sounds really good and really simple, so I may try that.

We should have a british thanksgiving day, where we give thanks to the americans for having one so we can have an extra turkey day too

I suppose you can give thanks for having gotten rid of us...

I assume we are going to my uncle's, as we have for at least the past several years (only semi-recent Christmas I recall that we didn't was the year my brother and I were both sick. My parents made a turkey dinner while my brother and I spent the day in the living room - he got the couch, I got the loveseat - alternating between 24 hours of A Christmas Story, a Trading Spaces marathon on TLC, and naps. Dinner will be turkey and all the usual trimmings.

I've been in charge of christmas cooking for the last 3 years and I have already said I'm doing it again this year.

I'm off work on the 23rd so I will be baking mince pies for colleagues, neighbouring shops and customers for christmas eve. I'll also be making some of the make ahead type things like a chocolate yule log and cookies.

For christmas day there will be 12 of us at the parents. Christmas dinner is always served at two pm! The starter will be sliced melon with a warm raspberry coulis. The main course will be a full turkey, stuffing, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, maple syrup glazed carrots, brussel sprouts with sauteed chestnuts and swede. I find its impossible to do veg that everyone likes so i make plenty of each and the leftovers can be used for fry-up in the following days. It will be accompanied by proper turkey gravy and homemade cranberry sauce. Dessert will be christmas pudding and custard for those who want it or christmas cake with cheese.

During the afternoon the turkey carcass will be cooked down for stock for the freezer and the giblets will be cooked and chopped for the cats.

On boxing day mum's family descend for a buffet lunch and will all be bringing something. My contributions will be my famous baked ham with a black treacle adn marmalade glaze and what we know as leftover pie. It's proper name is turkey en croute and it is filo pastry with a sauteed filling of leftover turkey, leeks, onions, cream and brandy.

I've already made the christmas puddings and cakes plus a selection of chutneys and sauces to liven up the leftovers over the following week.

My mum used to hate having to spend all day at the stove cooking but I absolutely love it.

                  I'll follow Kiwi's lead here....

Breakfast (the only day of the entire year where we sit together and eat breakfast):
                  French toast
                  Eggs
                  Bacon
                  Hash browns
                  Grits (bleeh)

                  Christmas dinner:
Ham (from honey baked hams; I've picked it up the last five years. Fuun)
                  Mashed potatoes (from scratch)
                  White bread
                  Candied yams
                  Green bean casserole
                  Deviled eggs (don't know why)
                  Cranberry jelly
and something else that I can't remember

                  Desserts include:
                  Christmas cookies
                  Pumpkin pie
                  Watergate salad
                  and the family fruit salad

No idea what we are doing for Christmas day, I just found out from my cousin that we are doing the day together, love how my parents forgot to mention that, lol ( My cousin's family rules, so no worries, just love that I am the last to know )

I *hope* there is pumpkin pie.....I may have to bring it...maybe I'll finally share my pumpkin soup!

Not sure what my stepmom will fix other than the traditonal ham and mac and cheese but at my house as far as I know it'll be:

                      Spiral cut ham
mashed potatoes (or potato salad, depending on Mom's whim)
                      green beans w/white corn
                      deviled eggs
                      chocolate cream pie
                      egg custard pie
croissants (we'll get those from Wallyworld . . .. yom yom yom)

I'm also planning to make a German Chocolate cake from scratch, but we'll see how my workweek goes as well as how much energy I have.

What I'd love to have is the super-secret recipe for Cherry Delight, which AFAIK only my stepmom's mom has. I'm hoping I can unlock this mystery and finally make one of my very own . . . then I shall rule the universe and everything within it. . . .
