  • thoughts? opinions?

Theodore Roosevelt wrote in a letter to his son:

The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life.
any thoughts? opinions? stories that relate?

My only thought is this is probably heading to Fratching very quick.

Yes, I have both thoughts and opinions.

Ooooohhhh.... you meant on this topic!

Seriously, I have long admired TR, and this sentiment of his, if it is indeed his (many things these days get misattributed to people other than those who said or wrote them), is pretty much dead on, and can describe not only many of the ills facing America today, but also the problems faced by many countries and cultures throughout history.

Hmmmm...I think I kept that rather fratchless.

And there is something else that I would like to add: Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

I think this is, to a degree, an extension of what was quoted from Mr. Roosevelt above. While I agree with this opinion, it is not new, nor is it mine originally. The above comment is from Benjamin Franklin, another person I greatly admire.

That's what Fratching is for. If you read the Site Rules here at CS, you'll find that we state "No Offensive or Controversial Content".

If open and rational debates about these topics interests you, please sign up at Fratching and re-post there.

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com
