  • How has that never happened?!?!?

That is the question I and many other people asked when Alabama running back Mark Ingram won the Heisman Trophy and it was announced that Ingram was the first Alabama player to ever with the Heisman. This was shocking news to many sports fans, as Alabama's football program is legendary.

While discussing this very topic on one sports show, it came out that one of the hosts had never eaten Arby's. Which of course is shocking to so many Americans, myself included, who have. Right on the set, they brought him some Arby's sandwiches, and he was completely floored. LOVED them.

So, the question is this: what things have you never done that tends to surprise or shock people, for whatever reason?

Myself, I have never smoked a cigarette, which surprised a lot of people when I had long hair. I have never cheated on a girlfriend, which hasn't surprised that many people, though at the age of 39, it does turn a few heads.

But I get far more shocked reactions when I tell people that I have never seen any of the Jurrasic Park movies. Not one. To quote David Letterman, "mechanical lizards." 'Nuff said. I have also never seen "Stand by Me," "Goonies," or "Christmas Story." Which for a movie buff is rather surprising, I admit. "Gone With the Wind," either, though I have seen parts of it. I guess that is not as surprising, since I am not really into the older movies anyway.

I have never been to an organized basketball game. Not pro. Not college. Not even high school. I have been to baseball, football, and hockey games, but as much as I love basketball, I have never been to one. Weird.

I have never seen an entire episode of Friends. I have never seen any episodes of House, at all, not even partly. I guess that's not surprising, though it does seem to almost offend some people. I watch enough TV. I don't need to see every damn show, no matter how awesome some people think they may be.

So, what have you never done that raises eyebrows?

Most people are surprised I don't have kids...well, relative strangers are surprised.

Can't think of anything else right now, but that could be because I'm getting rather tired.

Do want to say that the fact that you've never seen the Goonies very much validates mine not having seen that movie unitl my Sr. year of HS (1996), which my DH and friends thought was scandalous!

I do have to say, Jester, that seeing your sense of humor on here, I do think you'd like House...no pressure or anything.
    Don't wanna; not gonna.

As a child of the Eighties (I graduated high school in '88), it is even more scandalous for me not to have seen Goonies, apparently.

As for House, there is a lot I am sure I would like that I haven't seen. I'll live.

I have never seen the DiCaprio Titanic, or Moulin Rouge

I have never watched any Survivor or other reality TV show other than 20 minutes of the original survivor, and 1 episode of 1900 House.

I refuse to watch the mind numbing 'talent' shows on TV and refuse to discuss them.

I refuse to watch soap operas after being forced to listen to a week of some bitches 'stories' while trapped in a stryker bed.

Hmm, let's see. The first time I'd ever eaten at an IHOP or an Olive Garden or a Chilis was last year, when I was 23 or 24. We don't have them up where I was born and raised in Wisconsin.

My husband and I don't own a coffee pot.

We also play World of Warcraft casually. This always surprises our friends when they find out we've been playing for about 2 years now, because everyone assumes that when a new person joins WoW, they'll never been seen or heard from again. Husband and I, in fact, are still not level 80 (the highest level in the game) even after 2 years of playing. We've never been in an instance or a raid. I've been in a couple of guilds, but have never done anything with them. We pretty much only play together, too -- we're both the same level and have done all the same quests. Sometimes we'll farm separately but we always quest together.

When we got married, we took our honeymoon first and then eloped a couple weeks after we got back. We wear our wedding rings on our right hands.

As discussed in another thread, I don't drink.

People are shocked, some assume I was drunk driving and went to jail / caused an accident, some assume I am in AA, some assume I lost a friend in a drunk & driving accident, very few assume I am diabetic. The truth is, I just don't like the taste of alcohol.

Oh yeah, my husband is exactly like this too. He had a few beers once with his buddies when he was in college, got a slight buzz, no hangover. Didn't like the taste, though. Has tried a couple of things since then but has decided he does not like the taste of any alcohol so he doesn't drink at all. Someone once asked him if he was ... I can't remember now, some religion, maybe Mormon? We hosted Thanksgiving this year and all of our friends brought wine, despite knowing that my husband doesn't drink.

Heh. People find out that I don't drink caffeine and ask me if I am Mormon. Oftentimes when they ask this, I have a beer in my hand.

As a nineteen year old who has been engaged, and has grown up in a fairly socially liberal town, it still surprises most of my friends the first time I tell them I'm still a virgin.

I have never smoked a cigarette, or done any illegal drugs, which, again, considering the town, surprises people.

I am an action movie fanatic to my core, but have never seen Fight Club. (and, as a side not, didn't see boondock saints until about 6 weeks ago)

I have never had a hangover (I've had, total in my lifetime, one glass of champagne, and one cup of beer).

I never reached max level on any MMO, which surprises most people who've seen me playing them. Closest I ever got was a 54 orc warrior in WoW, got bored of the grinding.

ETA: Other movies I haven't seen: Shawshank Redemption, Any Hannibal Lector movie, Any Back to the Future movie, Citizen Kane, A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (Which I own on Blue Ray, but have never gotten around to watching).

My weight: I weigh 300lbs. People who see me expect me to weigh 240-260.

Though I was in the Army, I was also an actor the same time. Don't know why that surprises people. Look at R. Lee Ermey.

I didn't get knocked up before high school graduation, I have never had an STD, I haven't been married yet, I don't think pajamas are appropriate going out to dinner attire, and I shower every day and love it.

                      Gotta love small town Wisconsin

                        Hmmm...

I've never seen most of the movies that as a child growing up in the 80s and 90s people assume everyone has seen.

AMEN TO THESE. as to reality show like Survivor or American Idoil or any music star "win a date with me" or the Bacholer/ette or "Be my whore for a year" type show ---NEVER have seen any of them, not even curious about them. sit-coms just leave me flat and most of the drama show are so plot recycled

TV for me these days consists of History, National Geographic, Discovery, some A&E, HGTV, Animal Planet, Food Network, SciFi (or SyFy as it is called now), etc. I like history, geography, science, nature, cute animals, home renovation advice, etc, not some throughly recycled 100x over drama or comedy (though I will admit to Stargate, Dr. Who, Star Trek when it is on CSI in its variations)

my thing now is I want to learn about this world/universe we live on/in

I have never seen Dirty Dancing. I absolutely hate hate hate "chick flicks". I've never seen Moulin Rouge or Glee, which is apparently criminal for a theatre person. I've never seen Wicked or 90% of the crappy, glittery, spectacle based fluff popular on Broadway. I don't want to see it. I have heard a few of the songs from Wicked and I think they contain some of the worst lyrics I have ever heard. Being a theatre person doesn't mean I'm a musical theatre person and I am a complete snob. I'm okay with that.

However, I'm not a snob about movies. I like action movies. Some of my favorite movies to watch: Die Hard, Lethal Weapon...I saw Inglourious Basterds at the movie theatre...twice. I love Tarantino movies, although Pulp Fiction is not my favorite. (Reservoir Dogs is.)

I also tend not to drink girly frou frou drinks. The closest I get is a margarita, on the rocks, if you please. I much prefer a Dr. Mark (Maker's Mark & Dr. Pepper).

Oh, and not all Southern people eat crap like hog's feet or chitlin's. Don't believe what you see on Food Network - Paula Deen does not represent all people South of the Mason-Dixon! People are surprised when I say I don't like her show - I don't. And her accent is so overdone it's annoying.

I've never had a coffee from Starbucks.

I've also never smoked a cigarette.
