  • ANXIETY!!

So...I'm slated to leave town tomorrow, to go visit family and friends for the holidays. I'm way, way more anxious than usual because, as I'm sure most recall, last year when I left on vacation, my apartment got robbed. This has led to Lupo not being too thrilled at the thought of leaving town again.

I've spoken with the new managers at my apartment office, and explained that the reason I was robbed was because the day after I left town, despite my informing the people in the office of my leaving, they slapped some papers on my door. And left them there. for a week.

So, I said I was going to put it all in writing, basically a "Dear people, please don't put crap on mah door while I'm gone, cuz I dun wanna be robbed again!" letter (but make it more polite and professional, of course). I'll print out 2 copies, and both I and a member of management will sign and date both copies.

I've also decided that whilst I'm gone, I'm going to call in maintenance requests for the things I've been avoiding getting done, one every few days, just to maintain a presence around my apartment. I hope it's a good idea. I ran it by the new manager and she said if I gave her a list, she'd open a ticket every couple of days. I'm also probably going to call every few days, too, and pretty much annoy them with constantly asking if my apartment is ok. That on top of locking the windows, putting a padlock on my patio gate, and "booby trapping" the point of entry from last time, will hopefully be enough to protect my place.

I'm just freaking out. Had a panic attack last night while packing. Not fun. I'm looking forward to seeing my family, but at the same time, I want to stay here, just to keep my space mine, if that makes any sense.

I'm not going to tell you not to panic, because you will any way, and I would too. *hugs* and I'm hoping everything goes smoothly, but I did want to mention this:

There's no details as to what it entails (probably a good idea), but keep in mind that booby traps are very shaky legal ground due to an obligation to keep safe premises. Depending on what it does, you may want to rethink it =\

Basically, I rearranged my apartment after last time, and my big honking entertainment center is in front of the window where they broke in. AFter I put locks on the windows that secure them and keep them from opening, I'm taking a closet door I removed from my walk-in closet and sticking that between the door and the entertainment center, to cover the big hole where the TV sits. (Easy to crawl through, blech). not so much meant to injure, but further deter. Boggy legal ground is the reason I vetoed the Home Alone thumbtacks and broken glass idea my mom had... >.>

But traps are oh so much fun! Besides, they shouldn't have been in there anyway.

In anycase, be careful. Have fun. Also, don't you have a pal to cal that can check in for you?

Well, EQ and DataJager were sadly really my only friends here that would actually help me out. The only other people I know are either going out of town themselves, or, in the case of ex-roomie, would demand some kind of compensation for taking a precious 20 minutes out of her day to drive over, make sure everything's all right, and drive back. (This is the woman, who, when I asked for a ride to a grocery store once - a five minute drive, TOPS - demanded I repay her with a sushi dinner - and when she goes out for sushi, it's not unheard of for her to rack up at least $40, just for herself. Um, no.)

I guess this would would the point I volunteer, but it's about a 45 minute to and hour drive for me to get to her apartment. So yeah, sorry Lupo. If it was a shorter drive (even 30 minutes) I'd be cool with it, but unfortunately my insane schedule wouldn't guarantee I'd make it out there enough to satisfy your worry.

But in any case if anything DOES happen (hopefully nothing will of course) call, or text me right away, and I'll take the drive up there as soon as I'm able.

              Have a safe trip!

I suppose i should've edited to say EQ and DataJager were the only friends ABLE to help me out. I know you live too far, else you'd've gotten several texts before this.

Though, I may ask you to swing by once or twice, if my anxiety kicks in too too high...

Well, I've done what I can to secure the place, and I'm leaving for the airport in roughly half an hour. Here goes nothing...

Get maybe an auto-timer for the lights as well? and one for a radio or the TV as well perhaps so you can maintain a presence there as well if that helps?

                        seems appropriate, also.

Lupo, in the words of my hero, George Carlin, "Calm down...have some dip."

Seriously, relax. Yes, you are anxious. But try to enjoy your vacation. From what I read, you have gone above and beyond to secure your apartment, and from the sound of it, with the maintenance work that will be getting done, your apartment may be busier and more filled with bodies than it is when you are there! And unless the new management is a bunch of completely incompetent clods, it would be hard for them to drop the ball on this one. Hell, even if they are incompetent, one would think they would follow your requests if, for no other reason, "just to shut that paranoid nutcase up!" (What they might say, not what I think.)

True enough, and lord knows I agree with this in theory, but unfortunately, home owners and legal tenants have been sued successfully by would-be robbers who were injured by something dangerous in the residence. It's stupid, and it's lame, but so are a lot of other laws I could cite. So it's best merely to secure the place well, rather than lay groundwork for someone to be injured. Especially since some booby-traps conceivably could be accidentally triggered by one of the maintenance guys that will be in the place.

I know you said you don't have any friends that could/would help you out, but might you have a coworker that might be of good enough heart to do just such a thing? Just a thought.

Two things. One, this woman is completely out of her gourd. It's one thing to ask for some gas money or some minor token of appreciation for helping someone out. But her sense of entitlement is way out of proportion to what is being asked of her. I hope she chokes on some bad uni. Better yet, an uni shell. Those things are nasty!

Two, $40 for sushi for one? That would be a cheap sushi dinner for me!

Back when I had money, I would take Li'l Sis and Li'l Bro out for sushi. We usually spent $30-$40 by splitting 4 or 5 rolls. I can't eat much more than a couple pieces from each roll anyway.

                            Have a safe trip, Lupo!

I pointed out to my office manager that I was indeed coming off as paranoid and OCD, so it was ok if she thought that much of me, as long as my apartment stayed safe. I also told her I'd probably call and check in, once, maybe twice a week, and she seemed ok with that.

                              RIP George Carlin!

On point one, I couldn't agree more. (especially on the uni! gimme a good escolar or plain 'ol tuna anyday...)

On point two...$40 is actually a fair chunk of food at the place we usually go to. they have fantastic food and portions and great prices. $25 gets you a 20 piece sushi platter (which I can SHARE with other friends but she requires one all to herself!) and $20 gets you a bento special which comes with miso soup, salad, steamed rice, seaweed salad, fruit, veggie tempura and your choice of two entrees, be it shrimp tempura, chicken teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, beef teriyaki, or 3 pieces nigiri and half a sushi roll. Again, one of those and I'm stuffed beyond measure. Usually, I split it with someone and get a roll and a few pieces of sushi for myself. The hand rolls are fantastic and priced really well.

                              I want Japanese food now...
