  • Debatng over getting a Wii

For Christmas I got a total of $120 in gift cards to Best Buy. Wiis are $199 (plus 6% tax making it about $212 total). The difference would be about $80.

I have over $90 in my PayPal account.

I'm just wondering if I would actually use it or not?

There isn't much I can do with the Best Buy gift cards other than buy something non-critical and my PayPal money is for web development but I don't see any need for it until March (and by then I'll have another $300 in it).

Maybe I'll put the gift cards aside and wait until we can buy a new TV and add them to it.

        huh? I dont understand this.

Id say go for the wii. Its fun. You can do a wide range of things on it ie Wii Fit to Rockband. And then of course, just play old fashioned games. Wii sports, the game that usually comes with the Wii is fun all by itself.

I bought my Wii on Thanksgiving Day (local department store chain had them marked down $10 off of the regular pricing). Plus, I get 10% in cash back for spending $500 in a 3-month period. We spent New Year's Eve playing Wii Pinball, and had a blast. Before we knew it, it was almost midnight. Almost missed the ball dropping because we were playing Wii.

I'll say, if you have the money available, it is a fun game. I will be using my tax refund money this April to buy a new TV. Still running the old 27" CRT that I bought in 2001. I think I'm ready for a 46" LCD HDTV this spring.

If money isn't an issue, go for it. Wii is hands down the best console out there. It's nice to have games that my sister, my mom, my step-dad, and I can all play and enjoy at the same time. Plus it makes it easy to be active and maintain weight.

I got the Wii the day after Thanksgiving. If you have the money then I say go for it. Unlike Sonoma I actually MISSED the ball dropping on New Years Eve because I was busy playing the Wii with some friends. XD

Wii = AWESOME. Go for it!! You can hook it up to the internet and download older games right onto the Wii...I think. Have yet to try that out.

You can. But it costs points to get the game. You can buy the points online or at a game store.

I will say I own a wii, xbox 360 and a PS2. Out of all of the systems I play games on I still use my PC and PS2 the most.

The Wii is quite a bit of fun. Just depends on the types of games that you like.

That's an obnoxious thing to say. What's he supposed to do, keep his gift cards to the electronics store in case he has some entertainment related emergency?

Draggar, I have a Wii and I enjoy it very much, if my two cents counts for anything.

Sorry, the XBox 360 is completely out. I considered a PS3 for the BlueRay player but, again, I'm not into the games for it.

The Wii seems to have a lot of games that keep you active and have more "adult" related games as opposed to the true-gamer style games (IMO most adults would like to play a game of tennis / bowling as opposed to "Shoot Everything Up XXVIII").

Yep. That was a deciding factor - the games. I'm not into the newest / latest / baddest games out there. Sure, they're fun once in a while but I prefer more active games (like Wii Sports).

I think he though that since I mentioned the PayPal money I didn't have any other money for it, when the opposite is the truth.

I didn't want to touch my bank account money (which I use for bills, expenses etc..). I have a steady stream into my PayPal account (about $150 a month) and use that for web development, domain renewals, and if there's extra, fun things - this would go with the latter.

While there are plenty of games for the uninitiated/casual gamers (Wii Play, Wii Sports, Big Bran Academy Wii Degree, Wii Fit, and several others), there are also more than enough for the traditional gamers.

My list of faves/reasons to have a Wii:

Super Mario Galaxy - Simply the most fun I've had playing Mario since SMB3.
New Super Mario Bros Wii - Um... Ditto, but with multiplayer goodness.
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Every aspect of this game is full of win.
Super Paper Mario - While I miss the RPG element of the Paper Mario series, it's a really fun sidescroller.
Mario Kart Wii - Mario Kart never stops being fun. Plus, you can play online, and kick some global ass.
Star Wars Force Unleashed - Yeah, yeah, it's not as pretty as it's PS3/XBox incarnations, but you know that the prospect of using the Wii-mote as a lightsaber was the very first thing that every SW dweeb thought of when the Wii was announced.
Dragon Quest Swords - Or just a regular sword.
Cooking Mama - Did for cooking as a game genre what Phoenix Wright did for practicing law as a game. Very creative, fun, and adorable.
No More Heroes - Not a critical success, but a lot of good ideas and a good one to rent, plus the sequel is supposed to have polished all those ideas to perfection.
Metroid Prime 3 (or the Metroid Prime Trilogy) - Perhaps the game that has made the absolute best use of the motion controls, and it's f*ing Metroid for crying out loud.
Punch-Out - Screw Wii Fit, this is a workout. And you don't have to listen to creepy faceless instructors.
Trauma Center (series) - You get to play Doctor. Er, that is, Surgeon. A really fantastic idea, but any aspect of real goes away when the alien killer mutant virus is introduced. The sequel was more for two-player Co-Op, and the next one (Trauma Unit) will let you take the role of several different medical professionals (surgical, diagnostic, radiology/imaging, and a few others).
Rayman Raving Rabbids - I'd never played a Rayman game before. The first one is the reason the strap for the wii-mote was created, because some of the games are so damn infuriating you will want to throw the controller into whatever solid surface in the vicinity. The sequels were far less frustrating and more fun.

There's a ton more, but I haven't played them or am forgetting them. Also, this year will feature Mario Galaxy 2, a new Legend of Zelda, and Metroid: Other M (which begins a new story post-Prime and is being made by the guys who did Ninja Gaiden on XBox).
                              "You are loved" - Plaidman.
