  • Motion Sickness

So, I used to have really bad motion sickness as a kid. When my family would go on car trips, even short ones, they'd often have to let me sit in the front seat or else risk me throwing up on them. I thought I'd outgrown it since I haven't had a problem with motion sickness much for about 10 years now. Turns out that might just have been because I got my own car and started driving myself, rather than having to sit in the back seat of a car when going places with other people.

My husband and I flew to see his family for Christmas last weekend. We had two flights and the first of the two was really bumpy and had bad turbulence. I felt pretty sick during the flight but about 10 minutes after landing I felt fine. The second flight was much smoother and I didn't feel sick much at all. After we landed and met his mom, we went out to dinner. After just a few bites of my food, I started feeling queasy so I stopped eating. I also offered to sit in the back seat on the way home (we had about an hour drive from the airport to get back to my MiL's house) which turned out to be a bad idea. We had to stop twice on the way home so I could lose my dinner on the side of the road. After the first time my husband and I swapped places and I sat in the front, but even that didn't keep me from having to stop again later on.

Then, this past weekend, we went to Ikkicon (Japanese culture & anime convention) in Austin. The con was spread between floors 2-6 of a hotel so we were riding the elevator a lot to get between floors. Also turned out to be a bad idea. Elevators have always made me a little dizzy while riding them and for a little while after getting off them, but riding one as often as we did apparently made my stomach rather unhappy as I once again lost my dinner later in the evening.

Anyone else have motion sickness issues? Especially with elevators? I never knew it could be such a problem.

Elevators make me really queasy. Partly because of the movement, partially because of the confined spaces.

Cars, sometimes. As long as I can crack a window and look straight ahead of me I'm okay.

But airplanes? Forget it. I can't eat anything 1 hour prior, or one hour after flying. and I always have to get some ginger ale on the plane. *shudder* I do not like flying.

...Yet I do it so often.

My mom still lets me sit in the front seat. If I know I'll be in the car for a long time I take Dramamine, which knocks me out somewhat but it's better than being miserable. I'm not crazy about elevators, but I can deal with them. The few times I've flown, I took Dramamine cuz I wasn't taking any chances, so I don't know if I would get really sick or not (trains don't bother me, usually, but buses do).

Mine kicks in if I read when I'm in the car, like a book, a map, or something on a screen up close or if I try to play a handheld video game or with one of my ipod apps.

Took me a long time to figure out what triggered it, but now I'm pretty much ok.

It happens to me when I watch a video that is moving all over the place.

The only time I got really car sick was when my coworker was picking me up and dropping me off after work. She went 20 miles out of her way to do this for me and I was so grateful. My car was stolen and my other broke down. She did this for me for a month until I was able to get a new car. I appreciated it so much but she was not the best driver. She constantly drove in the next lane and stopped at the last moment at lights and stop signs. When she took off ramps I thought we were gonna flip over. That was one long month.

              1) Dramamine works great. We used to give it to our pets before we'd travel and it works even better on humans.

              2) RETAILWORKHORSE WENT TO IKKICON!!! He was working the video room the entire time! Bet you you saw him.

The only time I DON'T get motion sickness in the car is if I'm driving. If I'm in the passenger seat, it just takes longer than if I were in the backseat. Having windows down really help, but it's hell in the winter because people tend to have their windows up and their heat on and it makes it worse.

I tend to take Dramamine during really long trips, on ships, or planes.

I never used to be that bad. It would only happen if I read in the car. After trying one brand of BC, I noticed that the motion sickness increased dramatically and is still terrible, even after two years of not taking that one.

It always sucked when I was a kid, because I was that kid who never went anywhere without a book, and I could not read in the car. (Still can't.)

Me too. It's the main reason I like to drive. (I have no sense of direction but the anxiety over driving someplace unfamiliar is generally outweighed by the misery that I will endure if I get stuck in the passenger seat (or god forbid the back) for too long.

Boats...forget it. I went out on a fishing boat once for maybe 30-45 minutes total (just out and back; testing the motor that had just been fixed) and I was dying. As soon as we pulled up to the dock I was the first one off and had to sit down.

Dramamine, spearmint Life Savers (if I can find them; otherwise wintergreen), and Coke.

Dramamine, bonine and meclazine are for motion sickness/dizziness. The last one will make you pretty tired though.

Also, ginger pills seem to help, take them before a journey and continue to take them daily until youre back hom..though a ginger a day wouldnt hurt if you took them on a regular basis.

I had to do all this whilst on my cruise with hubby this summer.

Generally, I don't get motion sickness of any kind. However, the first time I went out on the ocean I had to "earn my sea legs" as they say. I was on a small cruise ship on rough seas- so there was no going back. I was sick for about 6-7 hours and then I was fine.

Haven't had sea sickness since- I can go out on any boat, any time- even if the water is very choppy.

I've had carsickness ever since I was a kid, though I haven't lost any food over it since I was ten or so. It's usually triggered by trying to focus on something in the car (reading, writing, checking a map, etc.), and usually fixed by looking out the window for a long while to get my body to stop sending conflicting signals to my brain. Haven't ever needed Dramamine yet.

Planes didn't bother me until I was pregnant with my first child. That's when I found out that when I'm pregnant, takeoff and landing are killer on my motion sickness. That was awful. Yay for knowing the acupressure points for morning sickness.

I've only ever had a problem with one elevator, and I was pregnant at the time. It was in a really large hotel in SLC, and that elevator practically zoomed up to my in-laws' room. Not pleasant. I haven't run into such a speedy elevator since, so I haven't been able to see if I can handle them without pregnancy mucking things up.

Boats, though...I'm awesome on boats. We went on a cruise the second year we were married with Hubby's whole family. The ship was late getting out to see (by about five hours), so they took off the stabilizers so they could go faster. This meant the ship was rocking more than it should have. Hubby (who has never had a bit of motion sickness in his life) and I were the only ones in our group not laid up the first half day due to seasickness. I'd worried about it, but I was right as rain the whole way, no medicine or pressure points or anything. We were weaving so bad that first day due to the captain trying to make up lost time that walking down the hallways resembled a game of human pinball. Hubby and I joked that you could tell who'd been hitting the bar too much because they could walk down the hallways in a straight line.
