I had mine out when I was 18. I don't remember what drug they gave me, but I took the first dose on a relatively empty stomach - big mistake. I didn't quite puke but I did move my camp from the basement to my parents' room (with the bathroom right there) just in case (which sucked cuz the VCR was in the basement so I was stuck with basic cable). Second dose I took with a bit more in my system, and still felt sick but not quite as bad. Gave up on the "good" drugs after that and stuck with Tylenol.

I didn't have too hard a time, to be honest (I had all 4 out at once, too, and two of them hadn't even come through the gum yet). Though I've had a number of teeth pulled in my life (had 4 adult teeth out before I got my braces, and at least 6 baby teeth)...maybe I just built up a tolerance . I worked with a girl once who had hers out and her entire jaw was swollen and bruised.

Ice cream, milk shakes (my surgeon gave me a can of Ensure, and my mom used it to make a milk shake), pasta (later)...

Oh, I got mine out on New Years Eve, too.

Yeah, try to keep food in your tummy so those pain pills just don't sit there. I was sick my first day after getting all 4 pulled because I took medicine on an empty stomach. I was in bed for a complete day and a zombie for two days. Sleep sitting up! Ice is your best friend. My dentist gave me two cold packs. They had me on lortab for the pain.

I had an allergic reaction to one of my medicines...hopefully that won't happen with you.

I hope you get to feeling better soon. Did you keep your teeth? I kept mine.

I echo everyone else's suggestions about ice packs, liquids, even take liquid ibuprofen. Check with your doctor and see if you can use Biotene mouthwash (that might help numb some of the pain in your throat and gums).

I had mine surgically removed years ago, and as I recall the pain didn't really last more than two days, so if you are still having pain and dizziness, you need to call the doctor. Of course, I really don't remember a whole lot from the ensuing week (thanks lortab), I do know I entertained my whole family that first day. Also discovered my allergy to penicillin during this time, that was what kept making me nauseous and achy like I had the flu.

Hope you are feeling better today!

Hi Everyone, first of all, thanks for your experiences and good wishes, helps to talk to people who have been through it as well.

I really don't remember what happened yeaterday, I think I stayed in bed and took painkillers it was a blur.

But the good news is that I really feel much better today, when i woke up my throat was not so sore nor were my gums.i still cant open my mouth but ive been able to eat enough ice cream and mashed potato to feel less hungry.

I have spent a lot of time today in bed and asleep, still quite dizzy, but nowhere near as bad as two days ago.

onwards and upwards from here then.

The first teeth I ever got pulled I was still young enough for the tooth fairy. Didn't keep any other teeth, though.

When I was 11, before I got braces, I got all four first premolars (adult teeth) pulled because I didn't have enough room in my jaw for the braces to work. Afterwards they had me resting for a while, and I started to get restless and wanted to go home, so finally they said I could go. I was standing at the desk with my mom while she wrote a check (why she didn't do this while I was resting, I have no idea), and I passed out...just long enough to fall (I knew I was going down, though). I grabbed my mom's arm and took her down with me. Then they stuck me in the recovery room for another half hour.

When I got my wisdom teeth out at 18 (now 3 inches taller than my mom), for some odd reason she made my dad come too...

              Glad you're feeling OK.

BE, I had a similar experience after I had my wisdom teeth out. First they sat me up in the chair...and I nearly fell out on the floor. It took two nurses to walk me out to the front, they kept telling me to look up but I couldn't really raise my head. They had me sit down while my parents got my after care info and paid and stuff. Then Mom and Dad somehow managed to get me to stumble out to the backseat of the car.

The first orthodontist I was taken to wanted to do the same thing. I only ever saw him once, and was quickly taken elsewhere. The second one put in something to make my mouth grow faster instead, then switched to braces once there was plenty of room.

My surgeon wouldn't let me leave unless I could walk more or less without help.

Hmm...I don't know if that was an option. I didn't end up with any gaps in my mouth or anything, so I guess my jaw didn't grow too much. If anything, I still have tight spots. Don't know if that's related or not.

Whatever you do, make sure that you don't get any food into those sockets. That can lead to infection, and from what I've heard...it's painful

I had my wisdom teeth out years ago. And yes, it sucked. I wasn't able to get knocked completely out, so I got to see everything. I really wish I hadn't! I couldn't feel a thing, other than some tugging. I remember being very tired, and my mouth being swollen for a few days afterward.

I also remember my dad attempting to change the gauze in my mouth. I also remember how it hurt when one of the stitches got caught inside said gauze I couldn't scream, so I hit him in the face, and knocked him across the room. His reaction? "Nice punch!"

Seriously though, just take it easy...and enjoy the Jello and milkshakes

                        Hi

Well today marks exactly two weeks since I had the procedure done.

I'm feeling much much better, can chew now although only opening mouth the width of a finger so it is still difficult, and chewing bewteen front teeth.

                        Dizzyness is nearly all gone.

I'm having whole periods of a couple of hours with no pain whatsoever, but when the pain kicks back in it is still quite bad.

There is no infection, but stitches are still tight and it feels like mouth ulcers in the area.

last night was so bad that i called for emergency advice at midnight. The doctor said there was no need to worry it just takes some time especially in a case like mine where a lot of the bone was drilled into. The pain lasted till lunchtime today when i finally got the pain meds to work.

I am in only a tiny niggling bit of pain now.

So there's the official line, it just takes time.

But I can see it is improving now.Just hope it doesn't get as bad as last night again.

ooo i keep forgetting to reply, i didn't keep the teeth, i didn't even think of such a thing! but that would have been cool!

Hi TA, glad to hear everything went ok! I had honestly forgotten that I replied to this thread, so I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner!

I never got a dry socket, but my jaw was swollen FOREVER, so I had to take even more antibiotics after about two weeks. It was a pocket of dead tissue and pus. (, I know, sorry to be icky)! I had to take more Vicodin and Motrin, along with warm compresses against that area. Ouch. Then it went away. But then a few days later, it looked like my jaw was swollen AGAIN, which turned out to be a swollen lymph node NEAR my jaw. I had a more difficult time with that area since I had to get a bit of bone removed. I took more antibiotics to get rid of the swollen lymph node, and they were VERY aggressive. I wrote some stuff in white below if you'd like to highlight, it might be TMI for others: The stuff they gave me was so strong that I got a yeast infection, since it really screwed with the balance of good v. bad bacteria. But my doctor told me that might happen and it went away with Monistat, but it still sucked!!!

So after about 6 weeks of antibiotics, I am finally back to normal, and it's a great feeling to finally have those suckers out. I'm 23, so I was a late bloomer when it came to wisdom teeth. My dentist wanted to get them removed while I was still young since it's more problematic after the roots have had time to develop. Just keep an eye on things and don't ever hesitate about calling the dentist if you're unsure about anything. Take care!
