  • Domino's Pizza Challenge

I am a pizza lover. I have been ordering delivery pizza for....well, forever. I remember the best and the worst, even from my college days. And for literally years, maybe even decades, I have been deriding Domino's Pizza as utter crap, and saying they would be better off putting the toppings right on the cardboard box, since no one would notice the difference in taste between that and their actual crust.

Imagine my surprise not that long ago when Domino's starting running those ads, not just saying that they were "new and improved," as a lot of corporations might have, but meeting their critics head on, and actually using the "cardboard crust" and "ketchup sauce" comments in those ads. They not only were saying they had changed, they were saying they had changed significantly, and they were recognizing that it was necessary.

Being the son and stepson of two advertising and marketing men, I recognized this as an unusual and risky tactic....very few major national advertisers will admit ever being wrong, since it opens them up for criticism, and the point of advertising is to sell, sell, sell. I also recognized from my knowledge of advertising and marketing that this could be a load of hooey, that the changes could have been superficial or less, and that they were merely dressing a pig up in a dress, as they say.

    Either way, I was intrigued.

So a short while back, two friends and I ordered pizza from Domino's. As in many life situations, I hoped for the best but planned for the worst.

We were very pleasantly surprised. The crusts on both pizzas were tasty and well seasoned, the sauce was what one would expect from quality pizza, the toppings seemed good, and even the cheezy bread we got as a side was rather nice.

Was it the best pizza I have had in my life? No, not even close. Was it good quality pizza that can compete with the other pizza delivery companies? Absolutely. Would I order it again? Shockingly again, absolutely.

Much to my complete surprise, I can honestly say my days of mocking and deriding Domino's pizzas are pretty much over. I'll find some other product or service to fill the void, of course, but this is still rather astounding to me.

So if you, like me, were a Domino's hater, you really might want to give them another chance. And before you ask, no, I don't work for Domino's, nor do any of my friends or family, nor do I have any financial interest in them. It was just such a unexpected and pleasurable change that I really felt the need to tell people about it. It wasn't just adequate. It was good. I don't pimp just anything, after all.

It tastes exactly the same to me.

    I was very disappointed.

I hate to say it but it tastes about the same too. I too ordered the pizza because of the commercials.

The only slight difference was the crust had a garlic taste. Even my mom was disappointed when she tried it.

I think i will stick with pizza hut or papa johns. Even better yet Digiorno.

I might consider Dominoes if they have a major sale or something, but Papa John's is my personal favorite and very close to me. (I always order carry out, I just don't feel like paying extra and waiting longer for someone to bring the food to me.)

Just tried it last night. Crust is MUCH better tasting. Impressed me. Rest of the pizza...sauce was better, but I still can't place it. I like real pizza better.

I think I'll have to try it, after reading the rest of this thread. I had heard about the changes they were making but didn't think they would be significant. Husband and I usually order Papa John's -- we never had one in the area I used to live in, so he introduced me to it when I moved down here and I've been sorta hooked on delivery pizza that actually tastes good. Next time we feel like pizza, I'll see if we can order from Dominos to compare.

I actually ordered the pizza BEFORE I saw the commercials for the new and improved crust.

I told my husband they must have ran out of regualr pizza dough and used the breadstick dough instead. Lol. I liked it. It had that little extra bit of garlic. Its not something they bake into the crust, its just brushed on. So if yours tasted normal it may have been that they forgot to brush it with the good stuff.

The sauce was definately different, but i couldnt put my finger on it.

I was a Dominos fan before, but this is definately an improvement.

I have a weakness for pizza and another, equally strong weakness...for chicken wings. I love chicken wings a WHOLE lot, just as I love pizza a WHOLE lot. However, I would avoid Pizza Hut like the plague, because they didn't serve good pizza and they didn't serve good buffalo wings.

But, given my weakness for delicious buffalo wings, I decided to try their new WingStreet Wings, and I was damn impressed. Juicy, spicy, large, and reasonably priced. I've gotten better wings at other places, but not as constantly and not as cheaply. Pizza Hut has gotten my money, and more than once.

                    The pizza still sucks, though.

What's with all the threads about FOOD today?

Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.

Where I live the choice for pizza delivery/takeout isnt that huge, but Dominos is by far the best & have some pretty good offers too
Just a pity I can't eat it these days... have to sit & watch everyone else demolish it instead
                        Arp happens!

Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today.

I ordered pizza from Dominos one day before I even knew that they had changed the recipe completely. I was rather surprised when I bit into the pizza. I prefer the old recipe by a long shot. While I'm a big fan of butter and garlic I just don't like it on pizza crust.

I haven't tried their new pizzas, since there aren't any around here handy, but I do like the commercials. I think it shows a great deal of confidence.

I love Papa Murphys above all others. Even if it does take a bit more work on my part (take & bake). Their Chicken Bacon & Artichoke is to die for.

I haven't had their pizza much, nor have I tried their new and improved pizza, but it takes a lot of balls to make a commercial admitting your pizza was crap.
