So, I did a quick jaunt to NJ earlier this week...fly out on Monday, come back on Wednesday.
Things did not go quite as well as I'd hoped.
My first plane was Green Bay to Chicago--O'Hare, no less! (The only airports I've been to prior to this trip were in Milwaukee and Newark. The thought of dealing with O'Hare intimidated me.)
Got to the airport insanely early, because that's what I do. I was the ONLY person in the airport for a little while, even beating TSA people. Now I know that the gates on A side open at 5 am. B side is 4:30 am.
Flight to Chicago isn't bad. Hussle around O'Hare and get to my next gate (heading to Newark) in about a half hour. I can only imagine what it would've been like if I had checked luggage. Get to my gate, and my flight is on time. About half an hour before we're supposed to board, we get told of a 1-2 hour delay because the weather is craptacular. (I'm still waiting for confirmation of 85 mph winds, btw.) Hell, most of the flights into La Guardia were cancelled and at least half of the flights into Newark were delayed.
So, I'm texing Lizziebeff and Mommy and the one person in NJ who knew for sure that I was coming and calling the MOTH™, keeping them updated. Fun was had by...well, I'm still not sure about that, either.
More weather related delays. And it was close to 60 in NJ, too. *pout*
FINALLY, an hour *after* we were supposed to land in Newark, we got to board the plane because the weather cleared up. Do the usual pre-flight stuff and start taxiing. Then, we stop. Our pilot tells us that we missed our...how did he put it?..."wheels off the ground" time, and we have to wait for our next one. In an hour. Oh, yay.
Close to an hour passes. Pilot comes on. Another half hour. Hey, would it be too much of a problem to give us something to drink, by chance? (Yes, if you're wondering.) Then, another half hour.
Eventually, five hours after we were supposed to land, we arrive. However, my leaving the airport plans didn't include being five hours late. SO. Don't really want to take a cab. (It would probably have been at least $50 to get me to where I wanted to go.) Future in-laws aren't home. Hmmmmmmm, who gets the honor of being the first to know that I made a surprise trip?
I text my friend Frankie. He's pleasantly surprised and more than willing to pick me up from the perpetual potential 20 car pileup that is the passenger collection area. (I love him!!! I loved him before this, but I love him even more!)
He drives me to the in-laws', who had since come home and were willing to get me, but by that time I had gotten ahold of Frankie. I give him $30, and ask if he wants more. He didn't even want that much, but I told him to take it with my love, thanks, and undying gratitude. That, and I'd hurt him if he didn't. I'm nice like that, you know.
Unfortunately, the plans that I'd had in mind for Monday afternoon, evening and night were shot to hell. I went to bed early for me, and slept at least 11 hours.
And if there's any interest, I'll post about Tuesday next.
