Today is the day that music died.
1959 -
Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and JP "The Big Bopper" Richardson as well as their pilot, Roger Peterson die in an airplane crash while traveling between shows during their "Winter Dance Party" tour.
Buddy Holly arrived at the last show frustrated with cold buses so he booked a flight to the next spot.
JP had come down with the flu and Holly's band member Wayland Jennings agreed to give up his seat for Richardson. Holly and Jennings have an exchange of words (in fun / jest as friends do)/ Holly comments "I hope your bus freezes!" and Jennings commented "I hope your plane crashes!". The comment, even though it was in fun, haunts him for the rest of his life.
Valens commented that he had never flown before and "flipped" for it with Tommy Allsup. Despite some movies, the coin flip happened after the last gig oin the ballroom, DJ Bob Hale of KRIB flipped the coin.
Dion DiMucci of Dion & The Belmonts was offered a seat but he couldn't justify the $36 per passenger price and decided to take the bus.
It just makes you think about how life can set things up and even fortunate luck can turn nasty.
