  • Stealing Canadian Culture....

A while back some of you informed us of a Canadian show, "Canada's Worst Driver." It sounded....well, scary.

And now, as we are prone to do, America is stealing the concept. Travel Channel is debuting a new show shortly, "America's Worst Driver."

Clear the sidewalks, folks. It's gonna get hairy.

Funny thing is, CWD isn't originally Canadian either. The Driver Rehabilitation Program has been running for over a decade in over a dozen countries worldwide. Discovery Canada just decided to make a TV series about it.

It's about time. But yeah, the concept was not originally Canadian -- at the end of the first series they showed clips from other such shows around the world.

Can I nominate my co-worker's wife for the show?

It was originally a British show, I think.

Every show I like has a slightly smarter British version, it seems.

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

Typically, if you nominate someone and they get chosen, and they agree to do it, you have to go with them as their nominator, and ride along with them while they do driving tests.

Our instore cleaner starred in the British version. She made enough money from the program, with magazine deals etc, that she bought a brand new car with the proceeds.

I'm mostly amused because of Jester naming horrible driving as part of Canada's 'culture'.

My worst driving friends wouldn't even make the cut for that show. And the thought of driving with them?

                          HELL no!

That is incorrect. I named a show about horrible driving part of Canada's culture, not the drivers themselves.

And not to be too jingoistic, but when it comes to bad driving, Canada has nothing on us Americans. And it's not just that we have the numbers (which we do). It's that, while we have some quality drivers, our BAD drivers are the pits! Shit, I'll put up drivers from various individual cities against your whole frozen country. Cities like Boston. Nashville. Miami. Los Angeles. D.C. Even my beloved Phoenix. And I am sure my American brethren will name other cities that are woefully driver-challenged.

If yogurt can have a culture, so can Canada!

What will be interesting to see is how the show will be edited. If I remember right, there was a clip online that said that the Canadian version was an hour-long show that was serious in nature, but shows in other countries edited it to be more like a half-hour long sitcom. Damned if I can find it, though.

I'll see your cities and raise you Montreal.

I have never in my life before or since seen as many wrecks on the side of the road, many of which were on fire I might add ( with the RCMP warming their hands on over it ), as I did when we road tripped through Quebec.

Seriously, we passed one wreck where they had managed to flip the car without hitting anything or one and have it burst into flames.....only to have the RCMP out there standing around the wreckage warming their hands.
