Last night getting out of work my door was kind of hard to open and the lock was practically frozen. So I drove it around for awhile to get the car warmed up and all of the ice melted from in the hinges. I got home, parked the car, came inside. Now I tried this morning to leave for work early because of the bad roads and cause I KNEW I would have trouble getting into the car.

After a half hour of trying to get in any of the doors I called in.

The boss just called me...he's pissed. I have a feeling I'm getting written up tomorrow if I can get in. When the sun is fully up I'm going to go back on working on my car and getting it unfrozen.

That sucks. I have been in the same position and it's incredibly frustrating.

My mom told me a trick: sometimes using a credit card to break ice around the door works. You have to be careful not to snap the card in two though! And I don't know how thick your ice is.

For next time, it also helps to keep a small tube of de-icer in your purse. I always used to put my de-icer in my trunk....smart. Now I keep it in my purse and it makes things much easier.

I think getting written up because you can't get into work due to car doors being frozen is bull shit.....I mean come ON what are you supposed to do?

Other than that I have no tips since I don't drive. I wouldn't know how to unfreeze a car door.

My boss made me walk the several several miles to work. Through ice. On bad hips. Naturally once my coworker called in, despite living far closer then I. But hey, it was fine. Cause she's a girl. And little large.

Look, don't worry. I doubt you'll get a write up. In the tiny chance you do, BE SURE to write in the comments exactly why you couldn't. I mean, they might ignore it, or tell you to take bus or cab next time, but at least you have a tiny bit of defense. Sorry it happened though.

It's not from the write up that I'm crying about, it's the fact that I still can't get in the back for the dog food I forgot to take out last night. So right now the dogs are feating on left over pork roast with gravey and some mashed potatoes. Me? Im having cereal...

Warm water poured around the edge of the doors may do it.

Cinema guy, if she gets any of that water on the glass of the door, it'll crack.

Do you have a hair dryer and an extention cord? Either that or hit up the dollar store for a ice scraper.

Tried it EQ, I can't get the heat to where the ice is. Bad design flaw on the PT Cruisers. I know some of my car is melting now due to the clear sky and bright sun. I'm hoping the next time I check it I can get in.

At least I can turn the key now. AND I can hear it unlick...now if the button would just go in...

Where do you park your car? I have a carport at home that I always park under so it keeps my car out of the weather. Maybe you can do something similar, park on another, more protected side of the building or park so that the sun hits the lock earlier in the day?

Hmmm, how about a car cover? One of those silly canvas/plastic things?

I moved from a house with garage to a trailer where we park on the street. No carports and the blasted plow came through at 5 this morning, another part why I was out so early to shovel snow.

Honestly I had been thinking about a car cover but never had the funds to get one before.

how thick was the ice? or was it just the seals that got frozen mostly? if it was the seals then when you get it warmed up and defrosted take a paper towel and some wd-40 to the seals and also hose down the inside of the lock. works pretty well down here and back east where my dad is from. as for thawing the locks i found a nice butane soldering iron at radioshack that would fit in your purse/bag and would clear the lock quite nicely.

I got the ice off the outside nicely...its the ice thats in the door hinges and that got into the lock that are the problem.

wd40 should take care of that nicely. it was formulated to be a water displacer for gun parts originally

Uh huh...when I can open my door I'll spray the hinges, but until then I wait on the sun.

Have you tried rubbing alcohol? I've also heard that nail polish remover works, but I'm not sure if that would mess with your paint.
