John McLaughlin. Jazz guitarist (Much of those guys are underrated along with jazz drummers). He was in Mahavishnu Orchestra. Also did work with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew. The first song below blew me away when I first heard it.

As for Jimmy Page, he may be great in rock but in overall music there are better guitarists out there. Even better than Hendrix.

Hendrix was good but on a musical level he's not up there. He had some great licks and all but Zappa, McLaughlin, Jeff Beck, and co are on a completely different level.

If you were to ask me who the two best guitar players I've ever heard were, it'd be Zappa and McLaughlin. Zappa's guitar work is incredible and McLaughlin is something else. Davis also said that he was the best guitar player he had ever seen. Hearing the solo on Meeting of the Spirits blew me away and had me interested in jazz.

Guitar work can be enjoyable, but to really appreciate it one has to span away from just rock.

Remember, this is subjective. Also, as I stated earlier, my opinions are from a music fan's base, not a guitarist's. I can play guitar about as well as I can shave my face with fuzzy dice, i.e., not at all.

As for spanning away from rock, I have to reiterate, my opinions are from a music fan's perspective. My opinions are based on music I have heard. I am a fan of rock. Most of what I have heard and am familiar with is rock. So all my comments and opinions about music and this topic are going to be heavily rock-biased. It's just the nature of the beast Jester.

Hell, someone could probably form a coherent argument for a country artist as the best guitarist of all time. I would be unable to argue that much, other than my general distaste of the genre.

I am more of a Sonic Temple fan, but I'm with ya. I'd hang with you listening to various tunes. I have no problem turning people on to music, and conversely, opening myself up to other people's tunes.

True story: years ago, I had a roommate named Marty. Cool cat. Huge LedZeppelin fan. One day, when we both were sitting around after getting home from our respective jobs, we smoked a couple of joints, drank a bunch of beer, and jammed to tunes. He played a bunch of Zeppelin, and opened me up to it a lot more than I had been. I played him a bunch of Heart, who is not only my favorite band, but also a band heavily influenced by Zeppelin. Marty had only really ever heard Heart's big hits, and was blown away by what I played for him: the quality of the songs, the imagery, the talent, and the fact that while the Zep influence was clearly there, they were by no means a copycat band. We gained new respect for each other's music that day, and frankly, I'm kind of bummed I don't do this sort of thing more often. (It may have something to do with the fact that I can afford a lot more outside entertainment now than when I was in my twenties. That, and I don't really smoke grass anymore.)

So yeah, I'd be all up for that, and obviously not just with The Cult. But let me add one last thing about The Cult: back when I DJ'd at the college radio station, there were many times when I would put on a Cult track, often "Fire Woman" or "Sweet Soul Sister" off of Sonic Temple, turn the monitors WAY up, and just jam the fuck out to it.

Yeah, well, Heart is on my short list of favorite bands. I dunno if they are my favorite...honestly, I don't think I have a favorite band. But if I did, Heart would be in the running.

Fire Woman and Sweet Soul Sister. Add Wild Hearted Son and Rain, and there is no WAY you'd be able to NOT jam the fuck out.

I like those guitarists who treat the electric guitar as the thing it really is: a violent, noise-making instrument. Great examples include:
