  • A downside of high-speed internet

I'm burning through my iTunes card like it's going out of style.

Ever since I got DSL over a week ago, I've been listening to streaming radio stations. No more extended breaks of silence while the player is buffering!

In particular, the two stations I'm listening to are WXRT out of Chicago (a station I seek out on those rare occasions I'm going down Chicago way) and KTCZ out of the Twin Cities.

And then I'm hearing songs I like and heading straight for iTunes.

I just downloaded "Oh!" by Eric Hutchinson. Very nice. I actually was first exposed to that song by the swamp's PA system. Some gems can be found in between the almost non-stop Mariah Carey, Celine Deon and Brett Dennen crap.

Wait until you find free Audio Books.

Of course, eventually, you'll get to the end.

Your paying to listen to the radio stations?

Nope. I'm paying for the songs I'm listening to on the radio stations. I download them from iTunes.

Ah gotcha, that makes more sense now. I've limited myself to a 15 dollar card once a payperiod. But then that usually takes up my whole entertainment allotment and so it's either that or movies out.

Have you tried out Pandora Radio yet?

You can customize your station to play the music you like and it selects music for you that's based on criteria you select and you can vote to keep each song or not.

There's nothing better for me than to come home on a warm, sunny day and throw on my headphone, take Gypsy outside and log into Pandora and kick back in the rocking chair with a glass of wine.

            Pure bliss . . .

Pandora is great. In the beginning I was skipping a lot of songs (and it's annoying when you reach the limit) but after a few hours / a day it became really good towards my tastes.

Now downloading songs by Die Kreuzen and Deep Wound (they're on youtube if anybody's curious or decides they don't need their eardrums anymore).

99 cents a pop for about 30 seconds of noise. Yeah....

Sure you weren't overcharged? Come to my house and you can hear noise for free such as:

My brother yammering on and on about NASCAR

Fire trucks zooming past the house

The occasional Cellphonasaurus Rex wandering up or down the sidewalk across from the house loud enough to be heard in the next county using every 4-letter word in the dictionary

The neighbor around the corner who insists on screeching after midnight on weekends outside on his porch . . ..

And you paid 99 cents for 30 seconds worth of noise . . .
