  • What Can Flo Do For You?

So we got dropped from our auto insurance.

Apparently, my one citation for failure to stop in 2005 and my one at fault fender bender in 2008, combined with my brother's two accidents from 2006 and 2009 were just too frequent and we were too risky to be kept insured......but I digress, I will rant about that some other time...

My mom got us some quotes from other insurance companies. I hate to say it, but sometimes the big huge companies are the best. Progressive will fully insure MY car (me as a single person not a family anymore) for less than $60 a month.

Our former company was a piddly small local insurance company. But if they're going to drop people over stupid shit like that, PLUS charge rates of hundreds of dollars a year....my insurance was normally $80 for full coverage on the car (over $100 when they found out about my ticket and accident).

I must say, I don't hate Flo anymore!

I have Geico. They charge me just over $70 a month.

I hear good things about Geico, too.

It's nice to get a new chance and not be treated like a frequent criminal....I hardly consider myself a risky or dangerous driver.

I really like Progressive. I had two accidents within a month (very very stupid), and that coupled with an accident my Dad had....my old insurance company dropped us. In less than a year, though, those two accidents will be off my record and my insurance should drop drastically. Yay!

I would recommend that you go to an actual insurance agent who sells Progressive Insurance. My agent was able to find a few deals for me.

ETA: When I saw the title of this thread, I did not think it would be about car insurance. That is all.

          Neither did I.

We have Progressive and they're not bad. My husband's rates actually dropped after he and I got married; I guess the reasoning behind that is that married people are supposedly more responsible and not out drinking/partying as much as unmarried people, at least according to his mom. Whatever, we didn't complain. We had an accident just a couple of weeks after we switched over to Progressive and they took really good care of us, too.

I'm a Progressive customer also. I had heard they were a bit touchy accepting people with violations or accidents, but I guess I've heard wrong.

When I read $70 a month, a red flag went up for me. What kind of deductible and liability coverage come with that? I once tried to switch to Allstate, and they quoted me $65, but I wound up not switching because their rep had lowballed me and gave me pretty much everything at minimum, like only $25K liability which would have left me wide open and vulnerable to bankruptcy if I was ever sued after an at-fault accident. I have never had an a/f accident.

My insurance is less than $50 per month. I have the highest possible coverages for liability ($100k/300k) and UMBI and and comp/collision with a $250 deduct, the middle coverage option for rental. Granted, I have a car that is 10 years old and a very good driving record. But it is possible to get very good coverage for a low price.

And yes, my ins company's spokesperson wears a "tricked-out nametag."

I'm planning on getting my driver's license and insurance this year . . . and most likely I'll be with Allstate.

Why? They can add me onto Mom's existing policy as an occasional driver (which she's paying $38.00 a month for liability and uninsured motorist coverage currently) and pay $200 down. I can't recall what the monthly payments will be (I'm thinking she said she was told around the same - $200) for 2 years. One year will be forgiven, so instead of the usual 3 years I'd have to pay as an inexperienced driver, it'll be 2.

As long as I don't have any tickets or accidents in those two years, I can get my own policy with them for a much lower rate.

We also have our fire policy with them as well (renter's insurance actually) which we pay for separately (we'll find out the final amount this coming week, as we just mailed out a photocopy of the security system installation certificate to them in the mail.)

Mom switched to them last fall after we received a letter in the mail offering a low rate . . . she called and it turned out it was a bit lower than she was paying State Farm.

Which came back to bite us in the ass New Year's Eve . . . we were pulled over a block from the house by a Greensboro police officer who had to take her license plate. Apparently State Farm reported to the DMV that Mom's insurance had lapsed.

Although she had current coverage through Allstate, the officer still had to take the tag. Luckily though he let us drive the car home and park it before he took the tag (otherwise we'd been hit with a $300.00 tow and impound bill)

                  Couldn't have happened during a good week . . . .

So, Mom called the 1-800 number for Allstate to get a paper faxed to the DMV showing she had coverage, which they told her she had to have her agent do. Mom didn't have an agent, she'd signed up through the 1-800 number. So this went on for a few rounds the following Monday before she was finally hooked up with an agent.

Well, it was 2 different ones here in town. First one Mom couldn't understand a lick of what she was saying, so Mom asked for another agent. She liked the second one she was referred to and she's staying with that office. They also took care of the paperwork to the DMV rather quickly, too. And also gave her a better quote on the renter's insurance. She's quite content with them now.

Bad part was that when she contacted State Farm to find out what had occurred on their end, the agent was not "neighborly" at all . . . he'd in fact put the wrong date her coverage was terminated (so she ended up with a lapse in coverage instead of being overlapped for 3 days) and refused to correct the mistake.

Mom explained to the rep at the DMV what happened . . . even the rep called State Farm and even after the agent admitted to the error, refused even for her to correct it.

So now she's still trying to get her letter for her hearing, and we've had to shell out for a 3 day inspection permit to have the car checked out (NC now instead of annual inspections, requires vehicles to be inspected when they have to have plates and tags) and another $28.00 for a 60 day tag. When I went to the DMV the following Thursday to turn in the inspection permit, the statement from the inspection station showing the car had passed, and Mom's ID and paperwork from the police officer, I still had to pay for the doggone tag (last time she had to have a temporary tag I don't recall having to pay for it.) Turned out the officer hadn't even turned in the tag he pulled off the car yet.

I so dread dealing with insurance companies when I start driving . . . but at least I know I'll be in good hands with our Allstate agent.

While they don't have a rep with a "tricked out nametag" they do have Dennis Haysbert in their commercials . . . .

I had an accident that was my fault and Geico did not raise the rates. Yeah! The only time they did was when my wife bought a new Highlander.

I'm not sure how good their rates are, but I do like the Flo commercials. I think she's pretty cool.

I can admit, that woman used to get on my nerves something fierce! She's grown on me now, though I don't use Progressive.

Watch out for Geico if you ever do get into an accident, and that goes triple for if you are found at fault. They dropped me like a hot potato, and here's the best part: I hit a car while reversing in a blizzard out of a parking place. There was no damage to either car, and no claims were filed, yet I was still a "risk". Weenies.

Well, I'm too "high risk" because of things that happened nearly 5 and 2 years ago....one was a traffic violation and the other a slight fender bender with no injuries or serious damage to either vehicle.

Flo used to get on my nerves until I found out how much money I could save.
