I need a computerized recipe card file. Something that I can keep recipes in and organized, and do it on my comp.

I've been looking around and there are TONS of them out there. The few I've used free trials of were crap so far.

I'm not adverse to paying for a good piece of software, but free would not be objected to.

    So, anybody have any suggestions?

Oh, and I run Win 7, but I also have a Mac running Snow Leopard, so either platform will work.

I don't know how much information you're looking to store besides just the recipes themselves, but I have a huge recipe collection over at http://www.allrecipes.com. They don't have a downloadable program (as far as I know) so you would have to have internet access to access all your recipes. You can add your own personal recipes to your recipe box, and also add recipes off their website. They let you customize and add notes to recipes that are on their site in case you like to make modifications to them. You can create folders to sort your recipes and they have a search engine as well.

Possibly do it as a html page, that way you can have an index at the top that links to each recipe that's further down the page?

When we get a bigger house I want to have a PC in the kitchen for recipes. While there are tons of programs out there, allrecipes.com (as mentioned before) is a good resource.

I can't give any recommendations on keping your own, though.

If you have hositng space or the ability to run PHPO at home, I had a script I used to use that was OK if you want to give it a try.

I've been there poking around a bit before, but never created an account, so I didn't know you could keep recipes online there. Although with the way sites come and go, I'd hate to enter in all my favorites and have them go out of business for some stupid reason, and then loose them all.

Creating my own HTML files for it would not be too difficult, but indexing and sorting, and searching for them may be after some time.

I tend to pick up books at the supermaket and use the recipes out of them, but at some point, they start to get warn, and frayed at the edges (and sometimes stained with what I'm cooking with ) so at some point, I need to transcribe them from one place to another. Putting them online is not a good idea because of copyright issues. Maybe I can set up a full site on my desktop. At the very least it would be an interesting exercise....

A few programs I"ve looked at have the ability to link to the ingredients from a database, create shopping lists from selected recipes, and even give you nutritional information on them. I guess I keep looking for reviews.

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to sign up for a All Recipes membership at some point as well.

Why not just type up and laminate favorite oft-used recipes as well? I have several pages that I keep on a magnet on the stove side of fridge that I can flip to and double check measurements, etc. Then you still have a hard copy and digital copy as backup.
Make a list of important things to do today.
At the top of your list, put 'eat chocolate'
Now, you'll get at least one thing done today

allrecipes has been around for quite a while. I've been a member for 8 years now, and I know they were around a while before I joined. It's free to sign up for a basic membership, which gets you an unlimited recipe box (I think -- I have almost 500 recipes in there and they haven't given me any limit that I know of, yet) and access to all the public recipes on the site. Even if you don't want to keep your recipes stored on their site, you might want to check out their recipes of the day section. I go there pretty much every day just to poke around and see if there's any new, interesting recipes available.

I did some searching of the less than legitimate sites for what I'm looking for, and have come across one that I really like. It's only $30 for the full version (and they have a demo version available) but it's Mac only.

The really cool thing about SousChef is that you can "play" the recipe on your screen in big, bold letters that you can see from 10 feet away (far enough away that your laptop is not as likely to get stuff spilled on it)...

I'm thinking of buying it, although I haven't had a chance to sort through the PC software yet...
