  • Exciting Weekend Ahead!

Just this semester, I joined the Gay Straight Alliance. I have always wanted to join one, but they never had one at my high school and I didn't even know about this one until the end of last semester.

The very first day, I was greeted enthusiastically and welcomed in like I had been there forever. No other club that I had joined had ever made me feel so accepted as this one.

This weekend, there is a conference in the capitol of Wisconsin where Alliances from all over Wisconsin come together and attend workshops designed for the GLBT community. They urged me to go, as it would be $60, but I would be reimbursed through our school's Women Center. All I really pay is $5 to the person who is driving a bunch of us there. The hotel is already paid, so I don't have to worry about those fees.

I talked to my grandma and my mom yesterday about going. I was sooo nervous because I thought that they would protest, but they didn't! They agreed that it was a great opportunity to expand my horizons, get to know new people, and have the experience of a lifetime.

So I am extremely excited and it can't come fast enough!

Hey, cool! Have fun in Madtown! I highly recommend a stroll down State Street if that will be possible.

I was in the Alliance in high school. I LOVED it. Everyone was most accepting. Unfortunately, the club didnt last a whole school year due to opposition. It was sad, but enjoyable while it lasted.

        Have fun!!

What is a Gay-Straight Alliance exactly? I've heard some vague ideas about what it is...we don't have that in Ausland.

Closest thing we have is at university level, where we have a Queer Society, a Queer Space and what's called the ALLY network. The latter is more education and support focused.

An organization for gay and straight people to get together and...I don't really know. I never was in one. They probably put on events to raise awareness of issues facing the homosexual community, or something like that.

So I got back from MadTown. Yes, Irv, we DID have time to go to State Street. We got to eat Ian's Pizza! <3

It was the opportunity of a lifetime. There was so much that I didn't know about the gay community. There isn't just heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual, asexual, and transsexual. There is a whole spectrum of sexuality!

I listened to a speech by a transsexual/transgender for the first time named Lorne Cameron. His story was just so inspiring and so heartbreaking. His photography work is just exquisite. I went to my first drag show and oh my goodness! So much energy and just a great time all around!

It felt great to be with people like me, who aren't heterosexual, and to have a better understanding of the community I belong to. I can't wait for the next one!
