  • Cats and laundry

As those of us who are cat-owned are well aware, their fur gets all over everything.

Tonight, I washed a couple of large items that had kitty fur all over them. One was a kitty blanket, which was horrendously dirty. The other was a throw that I have on my couch. The throw, unfortunately, is white.

They've just come out, and apart from my disappointment in the smell of the new laundry detergent I bought recently, there are little balls of fur on both items, and still a lot of individual hair. Is there some kind of trick to getting it all out?

I make sure to get as much of the hair off the items before washing them. Beyond that, make sure there is enough room in the dryer for them to fluff quite a bit. I have to take my comforter to the laundry mat to do it because it's so big, but more air moving around the items seems to help.

Always remember to keep a roll of duct tape handy. It can do almost anything.

Duct Tape > Glue gun, seriously, Can you build a boat entirely of glue and metal rods (structural support) you can with duct tape.

Fabric softener sheets. The only time I bother with the stuff is for things covered in cat hair; they turn loose and wind up in the dryer's filter.

Oh, I should have mentioned - I don't have a dryer. Everything is dried on a drying rack. I did vacuum the pieces before washing them, but there was still quite a bit of fur around.

Perhaps you need a good old-fashioned rug beater for once they are dry.

Honestly, when I wash things covered in cat-fur, I've always noticed that the dryer is where most of the fur comes off.

Throw 2 or 3 tennis balls in the dryer with them, but not in the washer. The bouncing balls will fluff the throw and help with getting some of the pills off of the fabric. It'll also help dislodge the cathair from the fabric

i second the rug beater idea. take it out side and beat the fur right out! and it's great stress management
