  • Puppy sickies...

My mom has a new puppy. A beagle-jack russell-pug mix aka mutt, just 6 weeks old and is so sick right now...

The past couple of days my mom noticed his eyes were getting swollen looking. She had called the vet and they advised warm compresses and a vet visit. My mom was originally waiting til the pup was 8 wks so that itd be able to get its shots as well while it was there. But she was going to go on Monday to be sure the puppy was ok. Unfortunately, Today they woke up and the pup couldnt even open its eyes, at all. Resulted in an emergency vet visit (thank God theres one locally) and a $175 dollar bill.

Gave the puppy Tobramycin drops for its eyes and antibiotic pills for the next few days. Its heart breaking. He hardly has the strength to play. He just slept the whole time I was there, barely daring to leave his bed.

I hope he gets better soon. Makes me sad.

Im guessing that since my idjit sister was traipsing this puppy around in the cold and hanging out with people that smoke (more than cigarettes) it weakened what Im sure was already a weak immune system...(I could be wrong, but she shouldve just left the dog home..it was freezing last week!!)

Aw, poor baby! Hope he's better soon. A 6-week-old puppy who hasn't had his shots should definitely not be traipsing around anywhere...! That's like the bare minimum for even taking him from his mother! A slap upside the head for your sister!

Hes just now 6 weeks and theyve had him for a week...

I told my mom that he probably shouldnt have been away from his mom, but my cousin (who had the puppies...not literally of course) had started giving them out starting @ 4 weeks. I dont know where the others are, but I hope theyre ok.

Seriously, a puppy needs to be with its mother a MUIMUM eight weeks (in fact, it is ILLEGAL in the US to sell a puppy that is less than 8 weeks old).

Pulling a puppy away from it's mother at that age can have devistating results in the short ter AND the long term - the puppy needs the antibiotics from the mother's milk as well as the security the mother offers.

Never buy a puppy form that piss-poor excuse for a breeder again.

Now, I hope your puppy does recover but then I'd report your puppy mill of a cousin to animal control ASAP.

Im sorry Draggar. I totally agree with you. Just so you know, its not my dog, its my moms/sisters. They got the puppy for free. There were maybe 5 puppies total and this one was the last to go.

I dont know why he booted them out so early, I did tell my mom I was concerned with the age initially. Im also not sure why the Vet seemed unconcerned about the age when she called (she did tell them the correct age, as it was reflected in the vet records Id read).

The puppy is doing better today per my mom. If that particular family has pups again, I will consider calling. Though its a part of the fam I dont have much contact with, so I may not know if the dog ends up pregnant at all.

Ill keep you updated. I appreciate your concern. Sorry to upset you. It kinda pissed me off too.

Update....: The Puppy has puppy strangles.... http://www.petplace.com/dogs/puppy-strangles/page1.aspx

Apparently its passed on from mother to puppy at random intervals. Not all puppies get it and supposedly theres nothing you can do to prevent the transmission as its picked up during nursing and the birthing process.

The puppy lost 4 oz of weight when it only weighs 5 lbs to begin with. They gave him stronger antibiotic and a steroid.

My mom is a mess, she was afraid the vet was going to tell her today to put the puppy to sleeo and of course, is paying for all this for my "sisters dog."

Well from what I understand, it does respond well to antibiotics and steroids. Good luck, we're pulling for puppy.
