i dont remember if i asked about this before...hmmm so sorry if i did

im thinking at 23 my skin shouldn't look like that of a 13 year old. my face still breaks out (sometimes b/c of, well, that time of the month).

a few weeks ago i bought on of those new loreal skin cleansers with the little scrublet, and it dried my skin out and made it red.

so i stopped using it and bought one of the St. Ives scrubs, which says to use a few times a week. i still am getting new pimples and its very annoying.

i want to wait before going back into makeup until i can get my skin clear. i dont think any cleanser or acne treatment will get rid of my redness. which is another problem. the rudolph look is not cute. any of you i may have on facebook can see what im talking about

i was wondering if anyone here has had similar problems and how they fixed them

    I used stuff from lush.

I used to have oily skin with pimples and they have stuff that really helped to balance my skin out and calm it with out drying

and birth control pills helped a lot too.

ive thought about the pill before, but i really hate taking pills, and since im not sexually active (and prob never will be ahah) i see no real need to spend money on it every month

      never heard about lush before.

and all they keep showing on tv are those damn pro-active commercials! grr

I'm wondering if you have sensitive skin. It sounds like the redness from the scrubber things is your skin just getting irritated and inflamed and mad at you. Do you use a daily acne face wash? One of the meds I was on a few years ago made my skin extra sensitive, and a sensitive skin version of Clean & Clear worked well for me. This will sound crazy, but don't forget to moisturize. If you pick an oil free moisturizer, it can help prevent breakouts (your skin gets dry, you overproduce oil, you get more breakouts).

Just as a random thing--Bare Minerals makeup keeps me from breaking out. It's not cheap, but there are some drug store versions, and they may allow you to wear makeup without clogging up your skin.

About the pill--do you live in the US? Walmart/Kroger/etc have birth control pills on their cheap pill ($4) list if cost is a concern. At your age, even if you're not sexually active, you should be getting yearly exams. </ nagging>

i had my first yearly exam last summer and she gave me 2 month free supply of the pill (which i read horrible reviews of--loesterin 24) b/c of cramps, but then discovered the amazing pill called ALEVE lol. the make up i was interested in was sally hansen natural beauty (carmindy from what not to wear's line) ive seen bare minerals commercials. looked expensive. i havent worn makeup since maybe last november. i just stopped using it, got lazy, plus it wasnt doing anything. my nose area was still always red, and concealer just dried out the skin. i just want pretty skin

Lush stuff is the ONLY stuff that ever cleared up my skin. My mom had acne from puberty to menopause, and I inherited her complexion. SIGH.

Try the Fresh Farmacy cleanser from Lush--it's done miracles for my skin. I also use their Enzymion moisturizer, which has helped keep the oil manageable. It's the only combination I've found that didn't strip the oils from my face (thereby prompting my skin to create even more) AND didn't make me break out. The moisturizer is pricey, but well worth it--the cleanser is actually pretty cheap.

              I'm 32 and if I don't keep up with a proper skin care regimen I have the face of a 13-year-old. :P

What works for me when I remember to do it is the regimen described at acne.org . They aren't selling anything, they're just a help site. They explain why some treatments work and others don't, and what they recommend is essentially the same as what's contained in kits like Proactiv (except that they tell you how to find the generic products and make it a lot cheaper).

8.95 doesnt seem to be too much, well its small but if it works then it would be worth it.

there are 2 stores in CT but each are about an hour away. i think i saw one once in RI, looked very pretty.

It's really good. One thing they point out is that a lot of the commercial products have extraneous ingredients that make them more irritating. They may cleanse, but the irritation makes them useless. The St. Ives stuff is all packed with perfumes and it never worked for me. They also say that because of the irritation factor, extra-strong ointments (like 5% or 10% benzoyl peroxide rather than 2.5%) are just more irritating and don't actually do the job any better.

                    The short story is:

                    1) non-comedogenic (i.e. doesn't clog pores) facial wash
                    2) 2.5% benzoyl peroxide lotion (like Oxy or Clean and Clear)
                    3) non-comedogenic moisturizing lotion

Do them in that order as described at acne.org to maximize the effect and minimize irritation.

I just noticed on the website that acne.org does now sell its own brand of these products. I don't know what they cost. If you get off-the-shelf equivalents at the drugstore you're getting the same stuff as what's in a plan like Proactiv.
