  • I'm a character in a play! (sort of)

I've mentioned before that my father is a technical writer. He's also been working on and off for many years on a novel about a fictional software company, and one of the characters in it is named for me. The similarities end at the name though; the character named for me is actually based on my father (that character is the technical writer) and has a Boston accent (which - despite living in the greater Boston area our entire lives, neither myself or my father ever developed in real life).

Anyway, a few years ago, he contributed one chapter of the book - rewritten slightly as a short story - to a collection of stories about technical writing that was later published.

Just today, he received an email from a teacher in Texas who had read his story, found it to be brilliant, and wanted permission to rewrite it as a play script and have their class act it out!

And seeing that it's a technical writing book that the story appears in, my character is the protagonist!

I've never really been a fan of plays in general, but I find this very cool!

Cool! I may have to find out when and where, and if it's close enough, go to watch them!
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

I can top that. I went to the Zoo with my friend Kevin yesterday but accidently wound up making a wrong turn and found ourselves at the Aquarium instead. So we asked where the Zoo was.

And took pictures of the people there filming a scene from an episode of "In Plain Sight". Judging from the angle, I'm the one in the background taking pictures.

Well, from what the email said, it looks like it's a strictly "in class" thing and not something they're putting on as a production; just an exercise.

It'd be nice if it was a production though. That would nicely pad your Dad's writing resume.

Not really. Most of the credit would still go to the person who adapted the piece. It would be, Title a play by John Doe. Based on the short story by Dave's Dad.

            /nitpick

The teacher may be rewriting the piece as an exercise, or to gain some experience in playwrighting. There are many many many steps for a play to go from idea (or source material) to actual production. It sounds like the teacher is going to have the class do a staged reading, which is really common for brand new work.
