  • Bought a house!

Well, for those of you who have been following some of my recent threads here and in Life Advice, you know that my husband and I have been looking for a house.

    We got one!

We are under contract now, had the inspection done last weekend, and are scheduled to close on my birthday, April 5. What a great birthday present! The house is wonderful. 2400 sq ft, 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, built in 1991 and in EXCELLENT condition for its age and location. Our inspector was blown away with how well the house has been maintained. The only "big" problems with it, is that there are a few holes in the soffit -- part of the roof that overhangs past the outer wall of the building. We have already contacted some contractors and it shouldn't be too hard or expensive to get them fixed. Luckily, it doesn't appear that anything is living in the attic, which we were afraid of, so if we can get the holes patched, we should be good to go.

The timing is perfect, too. We're just in time to get the $8000 tax credit back this year, and our lease on our apart is up at the end of April, so we'll about a month to get packed and moved out of our apartment and into the house after we close. It's going to be so nice to have more room. I make jewelry, and I have SO MUCH STUFF right now and no room for it all. I have boxes of both supplies and finished pieces stacked up all over the living room of our apartment rather haphazardly because I don't have room for them. I'm going to take one of the secondary bedrooms for storage for my stuff in the house, which will make it much easier to organize.

    So exciting!

Congrats Maggie!! You're going to have so much fun, just be careful not to get too stressed out trying to get everything done.

On a whole other note, what type of jewelry do you make? I'm just getting started doing beading (still trying to learn how to do the whole bead weaving thing, it's harder than it looks) and have been have a great time searching stuff out on the web.

Thanks everyone! Once we officially own the house, I'll take some pics and post them, in a couple of weeks. I am both looking forward to and dreading the move. I just keep telling myself that we have almost a month to move, so there's no huge rush. I can do a little packing and cleaning each day so hopefully it won't be too stressful.

Bookworm: I make chainmaille jewelry and I also make pendants and charms out of polymer clay. I do some beading work to accent my chainmaille pieces too, but nothing too extensive. I have only been at it for a few months so I'm still learning a lot too. I haven't sold much yet...I really love making stuff and am not so good at organizing and selling it. But, here is a great website for jewelry makers: Artbeads.com. They have tons of materials (SO MANY BEADS...my mind boggled the first time I went there, I couldn't even fathom what I wanted or needed) and they also have a great library of tutorials and sample jewelry lessons to get you started. If you wanna talk more and exchange tips and stuff, PM me!

Congrats!!! I bought my first place last summer. Made the offer in July, moved in August, lease on the apartment expired at the end of August. It's hectic, but it can be done.

Happy Birthday present to you this year.

Welcome to the entirely different headache that is home-ownership!

On the plus side: No asking permission to put stuff up on the walls... No issues with changing the landscape... No landlords... No loud neighbors making noise through thin apartment walls...

On the negative side: No landlords to fix stuff that breaks (and it will... faster than you would think)... Instead of asking permission from a landlord to put stuff up on the walls, you now have to get approval from inspectors and city/county officials to make -any- changes to the structure of your home.... If you want to change the landscaping, you have to do it yourself...

                But it's still awesome!
