  • Looking for late 1980's fashon color advice

I'm designing a series of historical websites and I've finished up the template for 1915 (just adding events now) and I decided that 1989 would be my next one (Berlin Wall falling, etc..).

I've already decided on a font (a computer like one) but I was wondering what were the primary popular colors then - was it still fluorescent colors or was it starting to incorporate the dark colors that dominated the mid 1990s?

(If you're really good - I also have on tap sites for 1916 (same as 1915), 1959, and 1991 and I may also buy some domains for 1981, 1983, 1985, 1986).

When I think of the 80's I see Neon. Neon green, yellow, and pink. With zig zags and lightning bolts.. Hope that helps a bit.

Um, when I think late 80´s I think vivid colours - not flourescent/neon, but still strong and vivid.
Search on YouTube for some of the popular shows and music videos back then for inspiration. MC Hammer, C&C Music Factory and Fresh Prince of Bel Air spring to mind (albeit the latter may be a more early 90´s thing).

As for the rest of the decade, I suggest light "pastelle" colours (think Miami Vice) for the early 80´s and neon/fluorescent for the mid 80´s.

A theory states that if anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for, it will be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

Another theory states that this has already happened.

Zig-zags / lightning bolts - nice addition., they would be great on the background.

Vivid colors - when I think of MC Hammer I think of gold colored parachute pants. C&C - when I look at the CD that I have (OK, are you scared now?) I see a lot of bright and stand out blues, reds, etc. High contrast, too (bright white backgrounds, bright blues / reds etc..).

            Like this one!

            Or this one!

Or how about this shirt? Might go with MC Hammer's gold parachute pants!

If I recall correctly, not only were the bright flourescent colors popular during that time, geometric patterns were also the style.

Bonus points if the geo patterns are in those "I need shades to look at those clothes" colors.

I think of fluorescent colors as early 80s, black/white accented with primary colors as late 80s. I'll go pull out my yearbook and post in a bit. Edited: yeah, I was right: black, white, a LOT of red, also blue, turquoise, yellow, and peach. I found my senior pic....wearing one of those ridiculous Cosby sweaters. :/

Flrorescent was really the early 80's with a bright colors in the mid 80's and then still bright but not blinding in the late 80's.
