  • Science vs. Student

From one of my daughter's classes:

    Assignment: (teams of two)
Name each of the three types of rock.
Describe how that rock type is formed.
Pick a picture from the box showing that rock type and attach to paper.

    Dim & Dimmer:

    #1. A. Sedimentary
    B. <blank>
    C. A couple of graham crackers stuck together.

    #2. A. Metamorphic
    B. <blank>
    C. A ball of assorted crackers.

    #3. A. Sediment
    B. <blank>
    C. Graham cracker crumbs.

Now if #2 had been a S'More & #3 a charcoal briquet.... and they'd had the descriptions they might of gotten more than 0 points.

Maybe #2 was intended to be "An Orb of Transformation"?

Um, I thought the three types of rock was sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous? Did they change the name of igneous?

13-year olds. Don't listen. Don't read. Attempt to bloviate. Figure "We're hosed, so let's have fun".

I'm sure they forgot igneous. And confused their second example with conglomerate.

In their defense, I've told my students that if they completely and totally blank on a question, put in an answer that'll make me laugh and I'll give you part marks for the effort. Oddly, my students leave questions blank instead of trying for a couple of extra marks.

Nowadays, I might not expect most of today's students to know the basic types of rocks, because they don't talk about the basic types of rocks on MTV.

My meteorology professor in community college doubled as the school's geology professor. Her car's license plate read "Gneiss."

I do that even when my teachers don't say that but they won't give me any credit. Though one of my friends, on a biochem quiz, was told to name the three amino acids he had drawn. My friend named them Joe, Frank, and Bob. She received half credit.

I have a bad habit of doing that - I don't like putting stuff down unless I know it's right. I'm working on this, but it's a slow process.
