Mom is having the gastric bypass surgery tomorrow (April 5th). She has to be at the hospital by 5:30 am and is scheduled for surgery at around 7. It is supposed to take an hour and a half to two hours to complete. If everything goes well, she is supposed to come home on Wednesday.
I don't know if I am going to go to the hospital with her. Mom is leaving at 4:30, going to my Aunt's house, leaving her car there, and my Aunt is taking her to the hospital. I would inconvienence my Aunt since she would have to take me all the way home (we live about 20 miles away).

Is this the same person that refused to change her diet like her doctor ordered before getting the procedure done? What happened to that?

Yes, Evil Queen. Mom still didn't change her diet all that much in the weeks before her surgery. She stopped drinking soda and that was it. Her doctor decided to do the surgery anyway because it needed to be done. He said Mom would have to stick to the diet after the surgery because if she didn't... well, it wouldn't be fun happy times for her and she'd learn to stick to the diet.

Mom made it through okay. The doctor said there was a lot of fatty build up in her liver, which he called normal for overweight people of her age, but other than that the surgery went fine.

Hmm. Keep us posted on her diet. I'm curious if she sticks to it when she starts to lose weight or not.

Mom is sticking to the diet- sort of. She tried sneaking a fried cheesestick from my cousin and it didn't sit well. She said she is tired of all the sweet protein drinks- she has to get at least 80g of protein a day and she drinks a combination of slim-fast, muscle milk, and some kind of soyish based powder mixed with milk.

She has lost ten pounds in eight days though.

If she's allowed some solid foods, might try quinoa (keen wa). It's one of the more protein dense grains and it's a tiny grain. Cook and use it just like rice, and it has a slightly nutty flavor. In fact, cook it on the stove, and throw in some frozen mixed veggies toward the last 10 minutes, season with some pepper and onion flavorings. Almost a fully balanced vegetarian meal. I use it in homemade soups and stews, as well. But it is a different taste than most common grains.

Her body has no choice but to lose weight right now, but she will plateau at some point and that's where the new eating habits and tastes need to be in place before that plateau. You can use the excuse of finding food that's tasty, won't upset her digestion, and is healthy to justify experimenting with new things. (if you aren't already, that is )

Make a list of important things to do today.
At the top of your list, put 'eat chocolate'
Now, you'll get at least one thing done today

The other trick, if allowed solid foods, is TVP. You can substitute it volume-for-volume for meat, and it has more protein in it. You can also mix it in with other things like crumb toppings and what not.
