  • Self-Contradicting Personality?

Okay, most of the people on this board know of me as the person who monitors the server, keeps things running smoothly, etc. I wrote the Christmas card list exchange tool (and v2.0 is in the works, believe me). I work on extensions and documentation for the TurboGears project. I've got, running at home right now, four computers. I've got a laptop with me (an Asus EEE 901).

I could go on, but, in short, I'm a geek.

Recently, I found another side to my personality, though, and it surprised me a great deal. It turns out I enjoy carpentry, too, and it's for all the reasons that make being a geek something that sucks.

When doing the geek thing, everything goes away and gets replaced. Nothing remains. In 2 years, all of the code that I've written is likely to be mostly useless, and desperately needing updates just to work on whatever the new technologies are. In 5 years, my code is almost guaranteed to be 100% broken, and needing total rewrites. In 10 years, it's probably totally useless.

Same goes for everything else geek in my life. Stuff stops working when I upgrade something else. It's fun to get the new stuff to fix all of that, but it still sucks to have to do so.

Carpentry provides something that will last. The same bookcase I build today can be used a decade from now. The same chair, the same desk, all of that can be used indefinitely, until physical breakage occurs. Sometimes even after that, if the break can be fixed.

It's odd to consider, but it's true: Two sides to my personality, two desires for my life. Each of them gets fulfilled by activities that are so different it's difficult to express the levels of difference.

Anyway, here's what I've done so far. Maybe it'll inspire some of you to try out some new things and find out some surprising new things about yourselves that you never suspected existed.

I see that as two side of the same coin.

I like to fix things, and I get the same sense of accomplishment from convincing a computer program to do exactly what I need it to do as I do from fixing a broken lamp, or for that matter from crafting a foam and plastic shield for my LARP group or making myself a set of perfectly balanced poi.

Wishing for your work to be lasting is not weird at all, and totally understandable in your position. However, I find it very hilarious that your first project was a server rack! Combine the best of both worlds!

I wish I could make things like that. My creative projects are normally thick crocheted blankets made with lots of strands of wool & large hooks

Currently squished on my desk is server & desktop pcs, old laser printer, inkjet printer, 2 monitors (soon to be 3 hopefully) & a wifi router, & a 5.1 set of speakers. Under the desk is another computer set up as a router. Behind me on the floor is an old laptop & netbook.
2 more computers upstairs belonging to kids & in the corner with the tv are a zillion more bits of flashy light electric stuff inc 2 modems (1 dsl, one cable) & a femtocell And I have another 2 computers in bits waiting for me to think of something to do with them!

I need somewhere to put it all tidily
I also need to stop hoarding boxes of old bits! And stop answering ads for more on freecycle

My name is Cazzi & I'm a bit addicted to computery stuff....

Is this where I also admit to being a bit of a geek?
        Arp happens!

Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today.

I should get that same level of satisfaction, but I don't. When the computer is acting up, it rapidly degrades to a very personal thing for me. I am the human, the computer is the machine, and it will do what I tell it to do, even if I have to reformat and hand code everything to make it do so. It quickly becomes some demented form of combat. Winning is not satisfying.

          Just a weirdness about me

You should have seen that closet before that rack was built and put in place. Wires everywhere, computers stacked on each other. It was a mess. Making that rack first was just a natural fit for me.

Sad part is that I'm going to have to rebuild it. I'm totally displeased with the shelf wood. Stained, it looks like shit. Oh well, I'll do so in another year or two when I get some of my other projects done.

Well, if I was capable of doing that I probably would as well, but I would be very pleased with myself once I'd won.

I just made some shelves for my bathroom, and instead of staining them I painted them black, they look pretty good, you can still see the wood grain through the paint, but they're not splotchy or anything. I'd try doing that before you rebuild the entire thing.

Unless, of course, you want to. It's pretty fun.

Don't be too jealous of me. I've always wanted to learn how to do that sort of thing. So, you're already one up on me

Well, I supplied nice pictures for my basic idea. There's nothing stopping you from expanding on that. And that idea? Doesn't get much more basic than that, really. The hard part was cutting the notches in the sides of the shelves to attach the support beams.

I think it's more because of the transitory nature of the victory. Sure, I won today. Tomorrow, something else will change, the system will be broken, and I'll have to fight it again. It gets tiring on occasion.

It is. And rebuilding will let me fix a bunch of other small issues that I hid in those pictures. I can do better. And I will. But I'll do so [I]later[/B]

Am I gonna have to hide all my carpentry tools?

Please don't. I would love to see what others are doing, and not just carpentry. Come on, share!

OK, here's a pic of the poi I just finished.

Now to learn to use them.

Okay, now I have to ask what they are. I think I might have found out over at Wikipedia, but am not sure,

Pedersen, there are some amazing videos on YouTube.

You should check a few out.

                          Yup, that's it.

First, Thank You! Pedersen for everything you do to keep CS up and running!

Second, my hubby is also a computer geek who likes carpentry/building stuff. He's already amassed quite a collection of tools in his workshop off of the garage. Unfortunately, he has the bad habit of promising to build me something and not getting around to doing it for a few years....he did make our uber cool custom pot rack though. It's made of copper tubing and is all welded and stuff.
                            Don't wanna; not gonna.

If I still had access to the Pine Hill House I could show you the kitchen my Dad and I built....actually, I think I do have the pictures. But it's on my desktop in NM with EQ. Did all the trimwork by hand.

When I convert the RV again (this Summer) I'll post pictures.

ETA: Although....I've been working on my art a bit and working on my backgrounds and landscapes and if anyone can give me tips that would be great....
