One of the best episodes he did was called "Blink" it scared the pants off me and I still cannot re watch it, but it was brilliant none the less.
In my opinion, Blink is one of the best episodes of tv ever written.

And the guy who wrote it, along with the brilliant eps "The Empty Child/The doctor Dances" and "The Girl in the Fireplace" is the head writer for the new season.

Tom Baker will always be my favourite Doctor I grew up with him on the TV and desperately wanted a long scarf like he wore.

      And Welcome to the Whoniverse
I started with Tom Baker 25 or 30 odd years ago when the local PBS station started showing his epsiodes hot out of the UK

second to him is well it is obvious David Tennant

patterns for the various incarnations of Baker's scarf can be found here

        Wonderful show.

I'd suggest the best place to start would be 9, or right about now (11 is starting off, and he's got a new companion, new TARDIS, wonderful jumping on point)

As far as the older episodes go, you can pretty much watch whenever you like, not much continuity except in Trial of a Time Lord.

But if you want my advice, start with 9 (new series) or find the two latest episodes.

          Blink was brilliant!

But yes starting with 9 like a lot of young people the last few years is a good start. You don't have to watch any of the old stuff to enjoy it. Plus it'll help catch up to current episodes, as it's probably a good idea to watch those seasons since a lot of characters introduced in those seasons are still alive and are sure to pop again here and there.

But definitely dude some backtracking eventually. Avoid the movie though, unless out of curiosity, completion's sake, or you have become a big fan!

Tom Baker was my first Doctor.

But Eccleston is definitely my favorite of those I've seen.

And I have to look up Comic Relief: Doctor Who - The Curse of Fatal Death, somehow. Atkinson as the Doctor? I bet it's brilliant!

Should I pick up "The Complete Specials" or wait?

I would wait until you've seen all or some of Tennant's episodes.

This is good news. I loved all the episodes he did earlier.

As to where to start, I agree, start with 9, and then after you've caught up with the series, if you're still into the show, go back and watch the older ones. I strongly recommend The Tom Baker episodes, but then I started with him way back when.

Each of the older actors brought their own special something to the role and you have to decided if you like it or not. I've seen everything that NetFlix has to offer, and don't regret a single one.

Just to throw in my two cents, since its Dr. Who and I’m a major fan. Like almost everyone here’s said you can pretty much start with any of the new episodes from the “new” series. The story lines are mostly one episode long - so 47min.’s with a few two parts thrown in during a season. It does make things easier if you at least watch episode “Rose” since it gives new viewers a bit of a catch up as to who the Doctor is. Like all series you’ll quickly get to know the characters and background.

If your going for the old serious, story lines will run anywhere from 30 minutes (23/25 minutes of show time) or if memory serves 5 ½ hours. This is due to the fact that a story line would run the gambit of a season and I think in Tom Bakers case two seasons for one of the story lines. Don’t worry they are now sold as one storyline chunks. Most of them average 1 ½ to two hours. If you do watch the old episodes remember a few things

                    1) Production had very little money to work with, the first seasons set design was allotted some where around $32 per episode for scenery design. They apparently used a lot of material from other shows and made the first Daleks. You know you’ve watched two much Dr.Who when you can recognize recycled scenery from past episodes. Bonus points if you can tell what episodes they came from.

                    2) Not everything is know about the Doctor. While we know very little about the characters past now, we knew even less then. This is why “Rose” really helps. It’s a nice bridge from the old viewers to people new to the show.

                    3) After David Peterson, story line quality starts to go down hill. Very choppy series and some of the storylines just weren’t up to par. If you can get them on DVD, I’ve been told there are elongated series which does take care of some of the choppiness. Personally I think this was due to Jonathan Powell’s seemingly dislike for the show, considering he helped get it cancelled.

At one point, my mom was going to knit me one but that project fell through for some reason.
It took a while for me to warm to David Tennant, but by his second series I was hooked. One of the best episodes he did was called "Blink" it scared the pants off me and I still cannot re watch it, but it was brilliant none the less.
I love Blink (I hear the Angels are going to be back this season?).

Thanks for the link! Awesome episode. Really enjoying Matt Smith as the Doctor so far.

I should really get some stuff from the Tennant era. They have like the 2nd and 3rd or 4th seasons at this local record store for about 40 bucks (20 dollars cheaper than what they usually go for). I'm assuming I should go for it, if I don't really need to see the first season first.

Thanks for the suggestions on how to get into Doctor Who. I started watching yesterday and now I'm hooked. I'm really sad that I have to study for a test this weekend because it means no Doctor Who until the weekend.
