  • Eggs! Eggs! Eggs!

We're off to a good start this year! The Banties are laying regularly (5-8 a week between the two of them - including one that is 4 or 5 years old), the quail started laying, and our Bantie / (NH or RI) red mix laid one, too!

This is what we've gotten so far this week (Sun, Mon, and Tues):

To the left is a normal extra-large egg you'd get at a grocery store.

Next to it, the upper one (brownish & larger) is from the mixed-breed chicken. (Her first egg, too)

The brown small one with brown spots is from the quail.

The other 4 are from the 2 regular Bantie chickens.

Waugh, quail egg. So cute. Funny, I was just reading about Pinoy street food made with quail eggs... it's called kwek-kwek, a.k.a. the perfect fried food, a.k.a. heart attack on a stick.

Now I can have ONE in my house. Yeah, just one.

I'm thinking a bantie eggs this weekend for breakfast - we have a lot of them now and its been a while since I've had some.

I hope they start to lay more often - they also might get a new hutch this fall (after hurricane season) since this one is really starting to fall apart (or sooner if it is deemed "uninhabitable").

Fresh eggs are great! Have you had any quail eggs before? Do they have a very different taste/texture than regular chicken eggs?

I want chickens! Although apparently the other city allows them if you have a large enough lot...

Most cities in the USA will allow hens (but not roosters due to the noise issue) as long as you can keep them (and keep them well).

You're in Ontario? You'll need to take into consideration winters. Here, we only have to wory about a night or two a year unless we have a tropical cyclone.

I know quail eggs are hard to crack but I've never had one before.

Yeah, most of Southern Ontario has people illegally keeping hens (they don't keep roosters because of the noise issues). Here there used to not be a law on the books until recently, and a group went to city hall to push for chickens to be expressly legal (and I think for reasonable limits placed on them). It rather didn't work, however people who already had chickens were grandfathered in. I'm not sure how they keep them over the winter, but I have a hard time considering that it's that difficult to do, given that so many people do it. Bear in mind that I live REALLY far south - around 44 or so.
