(background) I have a cat named Puck, that I had to leave behind with my parents in Wisconsin when I moved to Texas. My parents live on 80 acres of land in rural Wisconsin, so they let Puck go in and out as he pleases. They don't have a cat door, but he's pretty well trained to come to the door at night usually between 10-11pm so my parents can let him in for the night. (/background)
The other night, Puck didn't come to the door like he normally does. My mom stayed up till about midnight waiting for him, and she saw him in the yard playing with a mouse, but she couldn't catch him and he wouldn't come in on his own, so she decided to just leave him out for the night. Not a huge deal, he's spent the night outside before and he doesn't stray far from the house so she wasn't worried about it.
The next morning around 6:30am she felt a thump on the bed, woke up, and saw Puck standing by her feet at the end of the bed. She assumed my dad had gotten up at some point in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and let Puck in at the same time.
Well, later on when she talked to my dad, they were both shocked to find out that neither of them had let Puck in during the night. So how the hell did he get in!?
Well, my parents' bedroom is on the second floor of the house, and they have a small balcony leading off of the bedroom that overlooks the yard. Puck likes to go out there and look over the yard during the day, since it's so high up and he can see a long ways, so my mom had apparently left the door open during the day for him to go in and out and she forgot to close it that night. There is a big extension ladder leaning up against the balcony, something like this (my dad uses it for cleaning the outsides of the upper windows and just leans it against the balcony when he's not using it.) Their best guess is that Puck climbed up the ladder onto the balcony, and came in the door when he realized it was still open! This is an especially amazing feat considering the ladder is all metal and there's nowhere for him to grip it with his claws.
He's such a talented boy.
