So I have to rehome one of my cats
It’s been coming for a while now. I’ve tried everything I can think of to avoid this step. She’s an extremely friendly cat who wants to be with people and loves everyone. The problem is one of my room-mates is allergic, so when we bought the house the plan was to keep the cats upstairs so they could have room but stay out of the kitchen, off the couch, etc. so that my room-mate’s allergies would be kept to a minimum.
My older cat is very laid back (she’s my best bud). She’s perfectly happy with the arrangement.
My tortie, however, is thoroughly miserable. She wants to be with us downstairs and can’t be so she cries constantly and starts being destructive. I give her as much attention as I can but it’s not helping. She sleeps in my room at night but is constantly waking me up for ‘attention’. I was just diagnosed with a chronic pain disorder. I also have a sleep disorder that’s related to it so it is extremely essential that I get as much good quality sleep as I can. I already wake up on my own four or five times a night…with the cat trying to get my attention it can be ten times a night which only puts me in agony. I can’t shut her out of the room because then she starts crying and pitching a fit and that wakes EVERYONE up.
For an example the other night I was having a really uncomfortable, restless night. My older cat addressed this by curling quietly at my side, holding her paw around my wrist and purring…just to let me know she was there. My other cat addressed it by knocking everything off my dresser, pulling over the dog gate, and whining at the top of her voice.
I love her to death. She’s a very sweet cat, comes when she’s called, is very small and clean and really loves everyone…other cats, dogs, kids, whatever. She’s just so miserable and making everyone else miserable and I can’t figure out how to fix it.
