  • Homeownership: It's an adventure.

So, the nice elderly lady upstairs sold her condo and moved to a retirement home nearby. She sold to a nice young couple who seem quiet, nice, and good people. I'm glad to have more and more people my age in my condo park. The unit closed Friday, yesterday they got moved in. Everything seemed rushed, but last night, they spent their first night in the new place. I work early saturday and sunday, so wife and I were in bed by 10PM.

They were still unpacking by the sound of things, something I really don't mind given how fast everything moved. The realtor didn't even put up a "Sold" sign. the condo closed pretty much before I knew it had been sold.

Then they go to take a shower. about 15 seconds after the water starts upstairs, I hear something that sounds like 4 or 5 buckets of water being dumped on a tiled area. That means bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room.

Wife and I sit bolt upright, and race out to see what the noise is so we can stop it. That's when I discover the faildrain. The previous owners left behind the washer and dryer, and I never had a reason to touch either, so I didn't. Whoever "Installed" the washer just shoved a flexible hose down the drain pipe, rather than setting up a proper fitting for it. When the upstairs neighbor's shower plugged, they used a plunger, which was enough force to bring all that water up and out the faildrain all down the back of the washer and dryer.

Took us an hour to get everything cleaned up, and the neighbors were apologetic, even if it wasn't their fault. I'll post a photo later so you can see the faildrain. For now, I'm at work. :-)
    Coworker: Distro of choice?
    Me: Gentoo.
Coworker: Ahh. A Masochist. I thought so.

Wow, that's going to be a pain. Don't you love finding out about these kinds of things?

My parents found out the hardway that their house wasn't built correctly and the bathroom walls are rotting from the inside-out. Great!

I hope yours isn't too much difficulty to fix.
