  • Dachshund personality difference?

    Hey all,

My GF told me she wants a turtle...so I told her that she would have to get me a wiener dog if she did, if/when I ever arrive down there. Well, she's got a turtle coming, and she says to have found a wiener dog in the classifieds. The problem is, it's a longhair, and all the doxies I've ever had have been short-hair. Grooming problems aside, I've heard that longhairs have a distinctly different personality then their short-haired cousins. Is any of this true? Because I don't want a dog that's any less of a stinker than any of the other dachshunds I've known. Any opinions/advice?

There are three coat-types of doxies. The longhair, the shorthair, and the wirehair. The shorthair is the original. The longhair was bred way back in the day with spaniels to get the coat. The wirehair was bred way back in the day with terriers to get the coat.

As a result, long-hairs tend to have a bit more 'spaniel' in their personality. They tend to be a bit more eager to please and less all out stubborn than the shorthair. From my experience, the longhairs are the laid-back 'hippies' of the doxie world. But don't get me wrong, they still can be stinkers.

Wirehairs tend to have a more 'terrier' personality and can be a bit more bossy and aloof than the other two varieties but on the whole...it comes down to the individual dog's personality and how it was raised.
